Struggling to navigate life with teenager

Struggling to navigate life with teenager

My daughter is 16 years old and lives with me and my husband ( her Dad ). She controls everything I do, including when to come in to the house and leave my room we give her plenty of space as we both work during the day, and go to bed early. She calls me terrible names, and threatens me and has hit me in the past when she doesnt get her way she is Autistic and has ocd, and has been homeschooled for the last 4 years. Her own choice, Lately she throws things away that we own, into the bin and also breaks cups and glasses, at night when are asleep. I cannot understand any of this, she is an intelligent young woman and just hates both of us, no support is available because she refuses the diagnosis of Autism,I cannot speak of it or school or friends, I'm shut down. Now she is threatening me to leave my husband because she hates him.Im actually scared of her.

Hi @Wren05, that sounds like an intolerable situation.

Personally, I'd talk to HeadSpace family support https://headspace.org.au/services/family/

Please let us know how you go.

Re: Struggling to navigate life with teenager

No one should have to navigate through a situation like this alone, @Wren05. It’s good that you have reached out here to seek support. @Radder makes a great suggestion there.

Coercive control in autism is a complex area and it’s important that you are seeking specialist guidance – perhaps through referral by the medical professionals making the diagnosis, or maybe Autism Association of Australia - Empowering autism families can help?

As you mention that you feel scared, you may also like to reach out to other services as well, to make sure you have some strong scaffolding around you to deal with this complex problem – and so that you don’t feel completely ‘shut down’. You may find it helpful to contact Carer Gateway, 1800 Respect or Parentline:

  • Carer Gateway: Homepage | Carer Gateway
  • 1800 Respect: Home | 1800RESPECT
  • Parentline: Parentline is delivered by different services in each State/Territory. Search ‘parentline’ and the appropriate contact details for your location should come up.

At SANE, we can offer support for you as a carer. You might consider registering with our RecoveryClub programme, to access a series of 1:1 phone sessions where you can share your challenges and explore pathways for support. Welcome to SANE’s Recovery Club.

Here on the forums, you might find posts in the Families/Carers space that resonate Forums - Friends, families and carers. Please keep in touch with us, Wren05.

Re: Struggling to navigate life with teenager

Thanks @Radder for flagging the links not working in that ?format. I did fill a tech form about the links not working when sent like that. The issue was acknowledged so thought it may have been investigated and possibly fixed but maybe not just yet.

Thanks so much for the links @D4Dolphin sane has so many good ones!! Look for this tech glitch to be fixed soon 🙏
