Lost my life partner

Lost my life partner

I'm very nervous. I'm a 67 year old guy. This is the first time in my life I have opened up about my life to anybody, whether in person or in text.

It's been 4 months since I lost my wife to cancer. Only got 2 and a bit years from Diagnosis. She was only 64. We had been married for 43 years. We met when she was 16, and I 18.

I don't know how I can carry on. It's so painful. We had a wonderful life together, but, as a couple, we had to deal with the tragedy of losing two of our 3 children in recent years.

It was tough, but I was her rock, and she mine. Now that she is gone I am floundering day after day. I put on a brave face if people ask me out to dinner etc, but on my own at home, I am constantly breaking down.

I am also now re-living the loss of my children too.

It has all caught up with me. I feel so overwhelmed with grief and extreme sadness

I don't expect anyone will care to respond to this. I feel like I'm just making some silly entry in a diary or something.

@Numbandnumber Welcome to the SANE forums. We are really glad to have you here with us.

Thank you for showing up and sharing so openly and honestly, that's not always easy to do. I know you might not realise this but posts like yours help others feel comfortable to share honestly as well. This is a beautiful supportive community. I'm sure other members will jump in to offer support.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can hear how much you loved each other and that you had a wonderful life together. That's precious. No one can take that time or those memories from you.

I'm glad that you are reaching out for support today and sharing how you feel.

There is support available and you don't have to be alone with your grief.

SANE has a program that offers one on one support. I'll post the link to the information and registration page if you're interested Welcome to SANE’s Recovery Club

I'm sending you all my best this afternoon. You matter. We care.

Re: Lost my life partner

@Numbandnumber I am so sorry to hear you have experienced so much grief. It was very wise of you to reach out to this forum - no one should go through this alone.

Four months is still very early in your grief journey so its understandable you feel lost as you adjust to the new world around you. Try taking a day at a time, sometimes an hour at a time. Try to keep up the EAST daily basics of life: https://griefline.org.au/resources/east-self-care-guide/

Grounding techniques can help reduce distress in the moment: https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/support-toolkit/techniques-and-guides/finding-relief-through-grounding-techniques

I would definitely recommend seeking some form of counselling. Apart from SANE's Recovery Club that hopeful_hannah mentioned, others to try are:

There is also peer support available from trained volunteers who have experienced child bereavement themselves: https://www.ladybirdcare.org.au

There is no way around grief, you have to go through it. But each day is a step on your grief journey into the next stage of your life which will honour your loved ones by keeping their memories present in the world through you.

Please continue to reach out to this community through the ups and downs of your journey.

Re: Lost my life partner

Hi@Numbandnumber,

I am so sorry for the loss of your significant other and having to go through re-living the loss of your children. This is a very difficult time for you. You have come to the right place for support and understanding. Four months must feel so raw like it happened yesterday. It is important to not be hard on yourself during this difficult time. If you don't feel like going out then that is okay. Crying is absolutely okay and normal. Please stay connected to people whether through phone or email. Let them know if you need anything. Take it very slow one day at a time. Maybe you could join a grief support group in your community to stay connected to people who are going through the same thing. If you feel like something is off with your mental health please see your local GP. Maybe down the track you could get yourself a lovely little pet dog or any pet to keep you company. If you can go for walks even a short 5 minute one just so you can create a little bit of distance from all the heaviness you are carrying. Do very small and simple things. Sending you many 🤗 hugs. Please reach out again whenever you need to.

@Numbandnumber, sorry forgot to mention writing in a journal or book everyday on how you are feeling can also help you process your feelings and emotions.

Hi @hopeful_hannah

I wanted to bring it to your attention. It might just be me, but I've found links posted by mod's etc don't actually work. I mean, the text shows up bold and blue like a hyperlink, but I can't click on it to follow it.

If links are posted like @Radder has done below - the actual web address as the hyperlink - they work fine.

Anyway, hopefully that makes sense!

Re: Lost my life partner

@StuF great catch!

@hopeful_hannah I think the difference is I copy and paste the https:// links directly as text.

I suspect you are using a browser like Microsoft Edge that displays/copies/pastes the website's title, with the actual URL being an attached attribute. The latter is lost when you paste it into the forum's webpage which is not designed to handle that sort of format/attribute (perhaps?). Maybe try a different browser or paste in the https:// link from the top of the browser (they are ugly but they work!).
