Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective Disorder

I'm starting this thread in the hope I might find others who have Schizoaffective Disorder and to chat to them. This is the first time I've ever said it on here... This is not for judgement this thread, just for friendship.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

@Jigsawpuzzler

G'day, am 59 and have been diagnosed with schizophrenia since about 2009, medicated and mellow. I was talking to a psychologist recently and asked if there were any supports for my condition in our area, which is regional not outback or metro.

The answer was 'no', so I did some research online and found here.

It is a good spot not to be an odd one out, and simply chin wag.

Have a good day.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

Are you young or a bit older? Did you go through a lot to get diagnosed. I have. I go to a psychotherapist not a psychologist. The psychotherapist has helped me a lot. I feel like I am miles from where I was. Good psychiatrist and meds has put me on an even keel. Have you lost friends? I have lost one good friend when I was really ill. GP keeps an eye on me, nice lady. Still I am not accepting for some part for the diagnosis. Do you have anyone else in your family that has same or parts of your schizoaffective disorder. I think my dad and uncle did but not sure. If anyone else wants to jump into this conversation too.

No not at all. I just never see anyone with this diagnosis of Schizoaffective Disorder so I tried to find someone.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

Support is hard to find unless you have something quite common like heart disease. Not to minimise.

Sorry for your lack of support. Happy to chat anytime.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

Hi @Jigsawpuzzler

I am 23. The psychiatrist that diagnosed me has known me for 5 years. It was tough getting the diagnosis. A lot of inpatient stays. I’m glad the psychotherapist helped you. I am finally getting the right medication, and some things are looking better. Still struggling with depression. I haven’t lost any friends, but my friends have stuck by me for years. I am very lucky. It’s understandable to not accept some parts of the diagnosis.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

I was diagnosed as schizoaffective disorder (bipolar type) in very early adulthood after lots of inpatient stays as a teenager. At one point the diagnosis was questioned but I am back in hospital now for it and the psychiatrist is pretty certain I do have it. Im 24 now, doing a lot better than I was when I was younger. I went two years with no admissions (until now) and I feel like I am able to have somewhat of a normal life. It's still hard to accept that I have this disorder and that it's always going to be lurking in the background.

I'm glad you posted this thread because I've never met anybody with schizoaffective disorder. I was trying to find a peer support group but I couldn't find any online or in-person. My best bet is probably going to a bipolar one with the knowledge that I have something more. Better than nothing.

How do you guys find your day to day life living with the disorder? I've found it easier the past few years now that I'm more compliant with medication, although I've still had mood episodes due to being on the wrong ones.
