Manic episode

Manic episode

Hello, my sister is going through a manic episode or hyper manic not sure, it’s possibly a year now and getting worse, she lives with my parents and her son, my parents are in their 70’s,

At this stage she’s accused my mum of having the ppl in the town all against her, she believes that someone is after her head and that my mum has organised this. She said people are following her and want her out of the town,

Most nights she’s waking my parents up at midnight or past midnight yelling at them and accusing them people following her or taking her things,

her son has friends over every night of the week from primary school until late at night and they just do whatever they wan, she won’t let my parents discipline. She won’t let my mum anywhere near her son accusing her of brainwashing him , meanwhile he runs wild in the house breaking doors because he’s run through them with his friends or throwing things on the roof or not cleaning .

At this stage she takes their car and goes out to 4- 5 am most nights, she taken up over most of their house with her hoarding and mess: I’m more worried about the stress she’s causing my parents, that something will happen to them because of her rage

can anyone give any suggestions please on what can we do to help my sister or parents?

Re: Manic episode

Hi @Mahal, that sounds like a very difficult and distressing situation for both your parents and yourself. Your sister's behaviour is outside of your collective control, and any mental health help-seeking has to come from your sister unless there is a risk of harm to self or others. (If you are concerned about the latter then https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-crisis-support may be helpful).

You said it's been like this for a year or so. Did anything happen a year ago that may have precipitated this change?

You may try calling Relationships Australia for advice https://www.relationships.org.au

I'm also wondering if you would consider it elder abuse. Support is provided at a State level; here is one explanation: https://seniorsrights.org.au/elder-abuse/

Perhaps consider calling the ElderHelp line for advice https://www.health.gov.au/contacts/elder-abuse-phone-line or 1800RESPECT https://1800respect.org.au/violence-and-abuse/domestic-and-family-violence
