mother and daughter relationships

mother and daughter relationships

I need advice, im a 22 year old trying to find my footing I've just stared a new relationship with my partner and I can tell my mother disapproves of the relationship, I respect my mother but sometimes I feel like she has control over everything I do it feels like she doesn't want me to leave but I am legally an adult so in saying that I should be able to stay with my partner without running it by her first? I love my mother dearly but at the moment I feel like she projecting her fears onto me and making me feel guilty for wanting to have a serious relationship with him im starting to become more independent with him by my side as I've always kinda just kept to myself when I was home with her and even when we go over to mine nothing really changes she's either on her phone, watching tv, asleep or at the gym it was like this before I got into the relationship with him its always been like this and now she has a problem with because im spending more time with his family that actually talk to me and wanna know what I want from life and encourage me instand of saying I can't, as back when I was still in high school I wanted to do a crourse in criminology but she turned around and said I wasn't smart enough to do it but she would always preach that I can do whatever I put my mind too and I wanted to try. she called me last night and asked if I was still living at home and I said yes but I wanted to spend time with my partner as we won't see each other for a while at the end of the month so we having time together and I said id be home soon as I wanna do week by week one week at my partners one week at home and I have mentioned that to her before but last night she just blew up over the phone and it hurt she made me feel like crap, she used to tell me about how I needed to grow up and be more independent and as soon as I start doing that she backtracks her words, I remember when I was about 6 or 7 we were visiting my aunt and her daughter would get changed open her curtains and make her bed all before leaving her room and my mum turned around to me and said why can't I be like my cousin more and that stuck with me hard and still does I push my self to the breaking point and it still doesn't feel like its good enough for her I just don't know what to do I feel like moving in with my partner because at least I don't feel like im walking on eggshells around his family

Re: mother and daughter relationships

Hi @shadowwolf ,

Thank you for sharing what's been happening for you. It sounds like you're feeling torn between your love for your mum and your desire to build your own independent life, and that sounds like a really difficult place to be.

It also sounds like you've been putting a lot of thought into what feels right for you while trying to balance your own needs with your relationship with your mum.

I hope our community can offer you support and shared experiences as you navigate this.

Take care,

~ @Honeymoon

Re: mother and daughter relationships

I feel like your mother has NPD, or at least is controlling. You might want to read more about NPD and educate yourself, and not let her guilt and shame you into compliance. This is your own development, growing to be more independent as a young adult. I would start by seeing a counsellor first and then do the degree you want. Being assertive is the hardest thing you have to learn growing up within NPD family. See how you go and keep a record of the interaction; reflect on it, and be mindful of your intimate relationship. Part of being an adult is make your own decisions and being responsible for them. Good luck!
