Trauma-informed Complaint Pathways
Hi lovely people
:) Whoever is still here. Old and new friends.
I recently put in a complaint regarding a mental health clinician, and didn't think too much of it (it was done last year). Just yesterday I received an outcome, and I could not believe it.
I was believed, the clinician enountered quite serious consequences, and was made to apologise, as well as a letter sent to us both, which maintained that as there is an inherent power imbalance clinicians cannot use this to exploit the vulnerability of the patient.
I was expecting to be honest quite a bit of victim shaming, to suggest for example that due to my mental health struggles (and complex mental health) that they would just not believe me at all.
It has given me pause to think that there are movements happening where our mental illness is not only used against us.
Both things can be true - yes, at times our mental health may mean that some clincians may struggle or find it complex or even not so easy to treat us, but also that we are vulnerable, in a situation with less power when we speak up about our mental illness or consult a clinician, and that inherently, the clinician has more duty of care.
It was very healing for me to read, and I have felt a bit stronger in my own voice, since.
