Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Scared of admission

Scared of admission

Hello. I am a 29 year old who has just transitioned to living alone and work stress along with massive life changes has triggered a big depressive episode. I can feel myself deteriorating fast and intrusive thoughts are becoming more frequent. I have scheduled an earlier review with my psychiatrist for Wednesday next week but have been having thoughts about engaging in new self-harm methods as well as engaging in familiar self-harm habits [removed by moderator]. Should I ring the mental health hotline or is another service more appropriate to talk to someone about my distress until I see the psychiatrist? I am terrified about being admitted into hospital again as I can see my functioning declining further each day.

Hi and welcome to the forums confusedmeerkat (love your name by the way).

First I just wanted to let you know I've edited your post to remove the specific SH methods you listed, as our Community Guidelines ask members not to share details of them as it can be triggering for other members. Nothing to worry about, new members often have their posts edited before they familiarise themselves with our Guidelines - here: Community Guidelines - SANE Forums

I can hear how scary this is for you to be dealing with, and I commend you for taking the time to reach out and connect with others who may understand what you're going through. I can understand the fears around hospital, but sometimes the best way to avoid an admission is to reach out to talk about what you're going through. You can try the MH line, or you can reach out to the following:

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat

Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling

Samaritans: 135 247

If in immediate danger: 000

You can always let the person you talk to know that you'd prefer to work on safety planning and that you have an upcoming appointment, so you don't think you are in need of a hospital admission at this time.

ListenWell is another one you could try, they're a peer-led warmline for non-crisis support: ListenWell - Wellways or 1300 111 500.

We also have a blog post you might find helpful: Self-care for self-harming behaviour - The SANE Blog

I'm glad you are looking for different ways to support yourself during this difficult time, it shows great strength and courage. The SANE community is here for you along the way :)
