The Mirror

The Mirror

This just rolled out of my noggin', depth in a few paragraphs, different for all of us, absured in its profundity or maybe profound in it's absurdity, you decide😉

The Mirror

I look upon my image

as its looking back at me

in some ways I’m its prisoner

in other ways, I’m free

For what I see is not the man

existing in this plane

the mirrored me’s a concept

invented by my brain

Subjective in my nature

I see what I have felt

belief has played a major part

and cast this mirrored spell

he stares hard right back at me

this mirror man I see

a construct of my memories

and what I’d hoped to be?

My mirror self knows only past

he’s forged from pain and pleasure

built whole from patchwork cloth, he is

a man who’s learned from errors

and self-corrected, over and over

until a new man formed

this one more whole and self-controlled

better, just a little worn

I look upon my image

this man who looks to me

this flesh and bone construction

mocking what he sees

I am the product of his life

I am the work in progress

we two are one, inseparable

a whole formed from the chaos

The point of our existence

in our short time here

is growth, evolving, learning, truth

and overcoming fear

Re: The Mirror

@NPWM hey a fellow poet! Ah yes, poetry is so misunderstood today...much like drawing, painting, sculpture and other arts, it has a profound power to access our deepest selves. That mirror - who we think we really are - as opposed to who we show the world - is like a poem in itself....subtle, shifting, ever-changing and raw...and totally unique. Therein lies the magic, yes?

Re: The Mirror

@Icaruslanded I find it weird that I can only write good poems when I am feeling low or struggling. However after writing I feel like a weight is being lifted off of me.

Re: The Mirror

Hey @Jynx, thank you! I did not know there was a poetry thread, delighted to join, will check it out now. As a quick aside, I was doing business once in Canberra and had finished for the day, found myself sitting in a rather cool little cafe called Smith's Alternative in Deacon. They began setting up a stage, so I asked and it turned out to be a poetry reading. Anyone could have a go and I had about ten minutes, I so wrote a page there and then about the place itself. I got a standing ovation! The also asked me for a copy too, dunno if they still have it, probably not, it was back in 2013. I have very fond memories of this and it simple called "Coffee Shop" See you soon, poetically speaking;P
