Relationship anxiety sabotaging my realtionships, and destroying myself.
Hi all,
So, I don't really know where to start with this. I just got out of a 2-year relationship, half of which was long-distance. She and I ended amicably, but I myself could not handle the silence and empty house afterwards; it destroyed me. I felt so lost in myself the past week. I think it's fair to say I hit my lowest point, was lashing out, self-destructing, and being someone I know I am not. On paper, the breakup was handled smoothly, maturely, and there was shared care and love.
Once it was ended, for me, it was like the last straw; I lost myself completely. I couldn't process the idea of ending a relationship despite shared love, care, and a clear desire to be together. The contradiction, despite knowing the relationship was not working, and agreeing to end it pulled something out of me that I never knew existed. I ended up breaking down, and all round doing things that only served to hurt everyone, not least of all myself.
The worst part of all was in the end I hurt my ex, I destroyed the amicable framework we had, and I did it in ways that betray my character. I've been trying to look forward, tell myself that is not who I am, I was at an all time low, and was not in my right mind by any stretch. However I have been deeply struggling in my recovery, I want so badly to redeem myself in the eyes of my ex, her family, our shared friends...but I know I have lost the right, I know that pushing for that now is only doubling down on my mistakes. I know the only person who I can change is myself, and the only view of myself I can change is my own. But it weighs so heavily in my heart, I struggle every day not to cling to the past, and restart the cycle of blaming myself for my mistakes.
I am on the journey of discovering why I behaved the way I did, or at least what took me to that point, if nothing else I just hope in my heart that I never have to live through that nightmare version of myself again. I would love to hear anyone else who may share similar experiences, or have advice for how to cope while I sort out more professional healing.
