Question

I know people here are not doctors but I was wondering if anyone has had anything like this happen to them. So was sitting down the other day and lost all feeling from waist down not pins and needles it was as if the lower part of the body was just turned off I needed to pick up my legs with my hands and straighten them then it was like they just turned back on I did have a bad pain in lower back after though and had trouble walking for a while but ok now back to walking around and mowing the lawn and stuff.

Re: Question

You might have a bulging disc in your back which is putting pressure on you sciatic nerve. Sometimes disc bulges will cause a pinch on these nerves and thats where you get these odd sensations of numbness

Re: Question

That sounds terrifying. I have had work colleagues pinch nerves in their lower back and were stuck in a bent over position in massive amounts of pain. It occurred 24 hours after they did an overweighted lift and was caused simple by bending over at the time. Did you put any extra strain into the lower back one or two days prior? I know you didn't mention pain but it could be that you just got lucky.

If you can stretch your lower back without pain I would suggest a visit to a physiotherapist. If pain is constant see your GP.

Re: Question

Lower back area is very complicated and difficult area to treat. Regularly walking and just standing more may help strengthen the area but I would suggest seeking medical advice if walking more and standing more doesn't help. But, that's a good place to start. Good luck.

Re: Question

They can shave bone where the sciatic runs through the back + pelvis or they can shave the disc, or take out the disc and fuse the vertebrae... sometimes you body will heal itself or you can get a ct guided injection of corticosteroids to see if that will help the pain.

Re: Question

Obligatory "not a doctor" but that sounds like a pinched nerve.

From Mayo Clinic:

Pinched nerve symptoms include:

  • Numbness or less feeling in the area supplied by the nerve.
  • Sharp, aching or burning pain, which may radiate outward.
  • Tingling, or a pins and needles feeling.
  • Muscle weakness in the affected area.
  • Often feeling as if a foot or hand has "fallen asleep."

It is likely that part of your spinal column pinched a nerve as you were sitting. The feeling usually goes away after a short time.

Re: Question

Nah, I had an MRI, disc bulge in L4 was compressing the nerve in its little tube.

Was a bit scary not feeling my legs at first.

Re: Question

It has to be a major nerve to literally shut down half the body doesn't it?. I think I will need to see if I can get a scan done and see what is happening.
