Where to Next? Any Advice Welcomed

I have been under the care of my psychiatrist for over 5 years. I was diagnosed with major depression and schizoaffective disorder. I have had several hospital admissions including one that involved 12 sessions of ECT. I was petrified at the prospect but at the time felt some internal pressure from family and my Worksafe case manager. Following the treatment there was no change to psychotic symptoms however I did notice that my short term memory was affected. That treatment was over 2 years ago and I have noticed that it has worsened. I’ve mentioned to my Dr and to some extent my family.
Forward to today my Dr has suggested another admission for ECT treatment. Approval was granted from WorkCover. This process has moved so quickly that I have been experiencing symptoms associated with panic anxiety disorder. The problem that I need help with is with my Dr. He believes strongly in ECT but I can’t seem to let him know about my reluctance and fears. I’ve always struggled with confrontation and rarely speak up for myself. The problem with this is that I am not sure about my future treatment with my Dr and how my reluctance for his treatment plans may have on WorkCover. Any Advice welcomed

Firstly, welcome to the Forums!

It is really important that your concerns and preferences are heard when treatment decisions are being made. Have you been able to confide in a close friend or family member about this, or considered reaching out to a mental health advocacy service in your area?

You may also find it helpful to ask your doctor more questions around the risks and benefits, so you can feel informed. Perhaps they will be able to provide some encouragement and reassurance. If this feels too confronting, there is no shame in bringing a support person with you, or preparing notes and questions in advance so you don't go in blind.

Others in the community may have experiences navigating treatment decisions with their doctors, and be able to share what supported them when having difficult conversations.

Again, welcome and wishing you the best moving forward.
