Wanting more out of life.

Wanting more out of life.

Hi,

I am now involved with many local social groups. Hopefully I can meet new friends and possibly a girlfriend. I don't have a lot of friends and I have had difficulty getting a girlfriend. I have had some close matches but that is about it. So I have never had a girlfriend pretty much and I am in my 40s too.

Its also been difficult for me to get work too. I have been looking for casual work for months now. I wonder if I will ever get a girlfriend I may just end up remaining single all my life.

Nice if my life actually worked better. I know relationships can get messy. My life does work well in that I am organised and studying when I can to be a music teacher.

How do I actually be happy and live my life even if it may not have worked out the same way it has for my siblings who are all married and have jobs and some have families now too.

While it may seem unfortunate that I don't have a girlfriend or job. I at least get a pension. But I still feel oppressed and somewhat institutionalised having being unemployed for decades living off a low income disability pension most of my life.

It doesn't really make much sense to me for society to so badly oppress its citizens. Homelessness is a lot worse than being poor and living in government housing but homelessness I think is a human rights abuse. Some days I am fortunate I have my own place of my own in government housing.

It doesn't seem fair or right or just at all that I have been oppressed and struggling with my life for decades and just continue to do so.

I don't think it is alright too for people like me to just be stuck in poverty traps for decades, oppressed, marginalised etc. But that has been my plight for many years and its been hard for me to cope with living under such deprived circumstances.

How am I meant to live happily under a plight that I think isn't really alright its oppressive and alienating. At least I can make progress with my life. I sometimes watch documentaries of other institutionalised people stuck in jail and mental hospitals.

There can often be a lot of shared empathy I find amongst the patients at mental hospitals that can be helpful. It would be nice if people discharged from mental hospitals had a job setup and decent social connections setup when they have been discharged from mental hospitals rather than often being left on their own often having to organise many things for themselves and struggle to get work.

It would be nice if mental hospitals offered decent work programs instead of having many of them cut due to government funding cuts.

I go to the Mental Hospital art class they at least make and sell some artworks. But the sales of artworks isn't enough for the artists there to live off. The gardening and cooking and hospitality programs at the cornucopia cafe have been shutdown now for years.

Regards,

Argyle

Hi @__Argyle__ ,

We are glad that you have reached out on the forums - it sounds like there has been a lot you have been dealing with all at once and it's important that you have safe spaces to share.

Amongst the challenges, it was great to hear you identify some strengths: that the way you organise your life helps you to strive towards things that are important for you - like studying to be a music teacher.

You spoke about struggling with comparison - this is very natural. I often refer to the quote "Comparison is the thief of joy". Brene Brown argues that usually comparison does not lead to helpful thoughts or enjoyable emotional experiences. It tends to keep us feeling seperate from the world around us. Whilst it sounds that your siblings may have some things you want, it also is quite possible you excel in other areas and have unique skills and attributes that they may not possess.

I want to validate your experiences of oppression and acknowledge that it is incredibly difficult to focus on other needs when our basic needs of safety and housing are not met. I can hear you have a lot of empathy for others.

What stood out to me about your post was your ability to practice gratitude, despite your struggles. I feel this is admirable and a wonderful skill to have that can help to cultivate and maintain resilience.

Great that you are engaged with your hobbies like art as well - creativity is an important outlet indeed.

Hi,

I am glad one of my friends bought me an airconditioner I think out of empathy. I find so many richer people these days are all too happy to live in their bubbles. One of my friends who is from a rich family his dad bought him a house on the eastern suburbs so that was very fortunate for him.

I am glad other richer people do actually bother to buy stuff for more struggling folks and bother to help them out financially rather than just everyone live in their own bubbles. sharing is caring.

I think the people that often do help out struggling folks have often struggled themselves so there is that empathy there.

I don't think I would like living in USA and would likely struggle a lot more surviving there too. Living in Norway I think people there have a fairer go than ozstralia.

Argyle.

Hi,

According to Arthur Schopenhauer the amount of pain in life outweighs the amount of pleasure in life. So taking that into account I try my best to manage the pain and heal myself from from traumas and pains so I can be happier though this requires time and time out.

I think the arts like music, visual art and writing are thereapeutic to helping people heal their lives and can give people pleasure and interesting things to work at so they can cope better with their lives.

Hi @__Argyle__ ,

Often if we make space for our suffering, and learn to sit with it instead of pushing it away, it can be less impactful. This is no easy task though and as you said it does take time.

You mentioned art class in a previous post, I'm wondering if you have done anything creative/artistic today, or if you plan to?

Hi,

I haven't done much that is artistic today. But I have thought about innovation and how so many cultures copy each other rather than come up with useful innovations. Its tricky to come up with useful innovations but some creative folks historically have come up with many innovations like the Beatles where a very innovative rock band.

Being creative and innovative can be difficult. Its hard to come up with new innovations every day. Even the Beatles came up with lesser well known songs than some of their many hits.

I have mostly rested and recovered today. I am still sore from strength testing at the gym on Friday.

Hi @__Argyle__ ,

Sounds like you've been doing some reflecting today.

And rest is equally (if not more) important as productive time so it's great you've allowed yourself to slow down.

Wishing you a peaceful afternoon,

Hi Argyle,

Thanks for sharing this, I can hear that you've been dealing with alot and you make some good, valid points about the system. I know it can be dark and lonely down there, I'm in my 40's too and have struggled with some of the things you talk about.

I think its really positive that you're involved in social groups. I think Viktor Frankl in his classic book "man's search for meaning" talks about what he calls "unavoidable suffering" and I think the Buddhist's refer to life as suffering as well. For the governmental stuff perhaps theres some advocacy or volunteering you can be a part of that will help you to feel part of positive change whilst also providing solidarity.

Other than that keep enjoying the small things. Like David Lynch once said "look at the donut, not the hole"

Kind regards

Rhett
