Adolescent mental health unit

Adolescent mental health unit

Hi all. New here. My 15 yo just got out of the mental health ward at hospital a few days ago. This is a brand new experience for us. Was quite heartbreaking. Was in for 8 days. I’m not sure what I expected but it might’ve been a good circuit breaker after 4 presentations to ED with suicide attempt, self harm and threatening behaviours. Police took him the last time. They have been pretty good. I didn’t recognise him for a few days. However he is starting to come back. I think I expected a diagnosis and a cure in one week. I see now that was probably naive. Bit nervous when he got home. Trying not to tiptoe around him and be normal with keeping eye on him too! Nice to be in a place where people understand. I feel like a nurse. Medication juggling, assessing behaviour. Tricky times. Learning a lot and my heart breaking a bit

Hi @Booey

We are all so glad you have found this space. It sounds like the 'circuit breaker' was necessary, even if it wasn't the 'cure' you had hoped for. That transition period after discharge is incredibly taxing, and feeling nervous about 'being normal' while staying vigilant is a very common experience for parents.

Focus on the small victories for now - like recognising his personality again. We are here to listen whenever the medication juggling or the 'tricky times' feel like too much. You're doing a vital job!

Hello @Booey @MatchaToad @liminalzest dating dillema

How are you?

I'm an unpaid carer for my ex husband.

I think upon retrospect - he was definitely acting out as a teenager but more importantly

My oldest son at 20-21 was diagnosed with psychosis and popped in a locked ward in Queensland. His 20s was, very tough but at 25, he chose to stop using illegal substances and knuckle down with life. He failed at University a few times going back to tafe and trying youth counselling and became a very popular youth councillor at a high school. He then went to university got two degrees and got on with his life.

He telephones me once or twice a year to tell mne how much I destroyed his life.

I usually Tell him my object in life I s to financially set myself up so I not a burden on him or youngest brother as I get older.

It's isolating

It's tough.

You can I think get a bit paranoid. I see families having dinner together.

@Booey

Hi there, just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you and your son and hope he’s doing ok. We’ve had some really tough years with our beautiful daughter who is 19 and has struggled with mental health and suicide. As a parent the despair and feeling helpless is gut wrenching, wanting answers and being able to stop their pain- oh if only we could stop their pain.
Not everyone’s journey is the same, and I hope your son finds the best supports to help him. Wherever you are, you are in a community here where others can relate to what you are going through - you’re heard and not alone. With much love ❤️
