I Was Invited, Then Blamed - and It Broke Something Inside Me

I Was Invited, Then Blamed - and It Broke Something Inside Me

Hi, I’ve been debating for a long time whether to write this. I’m posting here because I’m not okay, and I don’t want to pretend I am anymore.

I live with severe depression and anxiety. I was diagnosed several years ago, and I take medication. The people close to me know this. I don’t talk about it often because I’ve learned that showing vulnerability sometimes makes things worse instead of safer. But this time, staying silent nearly destroyed me.

This situation started months ago, around October or November last year, when someone close to me invited me to attend a concert with her.

She was the one who brought up the idea first.
She was the one who suggested we go together.
She was the one who wanted company. From the beginning, I made one thing very clear: I could only go if I didn’t have to pay, because I genuinely couldn’t afford it. I even told her that if she wanted to invite someone else instead, that was completely okay, because I am not a fan of the band.

At one point, there had already been tension between us because I had misunderstood a similar situation before. Because of that, I was extra careful this time to say my boundary out loud. When she decided to go ahead and buy the ticket anyway, I believed that she understood my situation and accepted it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have understood why she would proceed.

Right before buying the concert ticket, she said she would only cover the ticket itself, not accommodation, which she did not tell me, so I thought she agreed to cover all, because I did tell her at the beginning, "I could only go if I didn’t have to pay, because I genuinely couldn’t afford it". But she then told me she did not mean that. After talking, we agreed that I would contribute AUD 150. That was the number I agreed to, and that was the only amount I believed I was responsible for. With that understanding, she bought the ticket.

Weeks later, we were looking at flights and accommodation together. We spent hours browsing options. She didn't agree to any of my cheaper accommodations and flights, saying that since we are going to have fun, we should live somewhere fancier, and she can't get up early, so we can't get cheaper flight tickets. I told her it's going to be expensive, she said, “Don't worry, I have the money.” So I thought she thought it was fine, because she never asked me if I thought the price was ok? When the final booking amount came up, without any prior discussion, she suddenly told my mother that she needed to pay half of it for me, which was triple the amount I agreed.

I was shocked.

I didn’t understand how we went from 150 to 450. I asked why this was happening and why she was asking my mother instead of talking to me. I felt cornered, confused, and humiliated. This was never discussed or agreed on. When I questioned it, she became angry and said she had never agreed to cover the costs. She insisted that I was the one who misunderstood everything.

The most painful part was that she didn’t ask for my consent before demanding the money, and she involved my mother directly. That crossed a boundary for me that I still struggle to put into words.

Overwhelmed and unable to process what was happening, I said that if this was the situation, then I couldn’t go anymore. I know this upset her, and this is the one thing I can acknowledge I regret — saying it in that moment. But it came from panic, not malice.

After that, everything escalated.

I tried to talk to her calmly and asked two simple questions again and again:

“Why did you ask for the money from my mom instead of me if you believe I promised to share half of the cost?”
“What did I do wrong? Please tell me exactly what it was.”

She never answered my questions.

Instead, she accused me of being selfish, dishonest, and of causing her financial loss, because I told her I am not going after she bought the tickets. I told her I said at the right beginning: “I could only go if I didn’t have to pay, because I genuinely couldn’t afford it”. But she started pretending that I never told her that, and she told me she is only covering the tickets. After that, she start screming at me. And, even though most bookings were refundable, she demanded that I have to pay everything, including her share, because she said I “caused” her not to want to go anymore.

Later that night, after she left, I completely broke down. I couldn’t stop crying. My body was shaking uncontrollably. I wasn’t trying to get attention - I genuinely couldn’t control my reaction. I even asked someone to stay with me to make sure I was safe.

She came back suddenly.

She saw me crying, and instead of leaving, she told me that if all I could do was cry and “use my depression to gain sympathy,” then I should just go and die. Right in front of my mom.

She knew about my diagnosis.
She knew I take medication.
She knew how hard it is for me to stay functional.

Hearing that felt like something inside me collapsed. It wasn’t just cruel - it was dehumanising.

Later, when I was slightly calmer, I decided that if the issue was me backing out after payment, I would apologise for that part alone and pay for that part, but she could still go, so I wouldn't pay her part, since she was the one who wanted to go to the concert. I went to her and told her I am here to apologise. But she refused to listen and screamed at me to leave.

That night, I didn’t sleep. Even now, my body feels frozen, like it’s stuck in that moment. I replay everything over and over, wondering how someone who invited me, who knew my limits, and who knew my mental health, could turn it all into proof that I deserved to be treated this way.

What hurts most isn’t just the argument or the money.

It’s the loss of trust.
The feeling that my illness was used against me.
That my pain was reframed as manipulation.

I reached a point where I had thoughts of harming myself - thoughts that scared me deeply. I’m still here because I reached out, because someone stayed with me, and because I’m trying to choose safety even when everything feels unbearable.

I don’t know how to process this yet.
I don’t know how to trust people again.
But I know I don’t want to disappear.

I’m sharing this here because I need to be heard somewhere - without being shouted down, blamed, or told my pain isn’t real.

Thank you for reading.

Welcome to the forums @starfish1 ,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story and what's been going on for you. It sounds incredibly hard to be blamed when you clearly, from the beginning, stated that you could not afford this trip, let alone paying for the best.

I hear the loss of trust too.

It takes a lot to sit in that uncomfortable space, so I want to recognise that.

Please know we are here for you.

For now, can you think of something pleasant you can do for yourself?

Thank you for your kindness and for hearing me. Being blamed despite clearly stating my limits was very painful, and the loss of trust has been hard.

For now, I’m taking on the suggestion of my therapist to do something pleasant for myself and have decided to watch an interesting TV series to distract my mind and give myself a bit of space from everything else.

Good on you @starfish1 ,

Distraction can certainly be helpful when things are tough.

Then hopefully, when you feel up to it, you will be more able to think about the situation and do whatever you have to as part of moving forward and healing from this experience.

Once again, I'm sorry to hear that a supposedly pleasant trip, ended up this way.

@starfish1 You did nothing wrong. You set boundaries because of your limitations, compromised, tried multiple times to communicate and apologised, even when you weren't the one causing problems.

This "friend" needs to work on their communication and especially their empathy. What they said to you was vile and a sign that they aren't a safe person.

Most importantly: you deserve to have peace and happiness, you belong on this earth and I am glad you are still here.

I am so glad you found this amazing forum and the incredible community behind it. Stay safe and keep looking for the beauty in the world ❤️

Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words. Reading them really made me feel seen and understood, and that means more than I can say. I’m still processing everything, but I’m trying to take care of myself and focus on small moments of peace and comfort.

@starfish1 As someone who clawed her way out of a deep depression, while having undiagnosed C-ptsd, this is the best approach. Do something small that brings you joy or peace, go on a stroll or even an angry walk (I found a lot of catharsis after a serious betrayal by blasting high energy music and walking like I was storming a castle 😅) and treat yourself with a snack or film/show you enjoy. And never feel guilty about having a cry, it is the brain's way of detoxing.

Focus on the now for now and the later stuff will happen when it happens ❤️

Thank you so much for your advice and for sharing your experience. I really appreciate it and I’ll try to follow your suggestions, maybe a walk or a show will help me take a small break from everything and feel better.
