Fear of medication

Fear of medication

Hi, I am new to diagnosis of OCD and have been struggling a lot with thoughts of contamination and poisoning (and debilitating anxiety). My GP has prescribed me an antidepressant [name edited by moderator] at a low dose to trial, along with other medications [name edited by moderator] for particularly bad high anxiety days. However, I am scared to take it! My brain is not cooperating, and I keep thinking that if I do take the meds that something bad will happen to me... My doctor affirmed me that nothing bad will happen to me if I take the antidepressant with my iron supplement and that it's a safe combination. Even antidepressant iron tablet and anxiety medication on a rough day wouldn't pose any harm apparently... I've also been making a tonne of excuses not to take them. I have been on this medication before, years ago, and it helped me a lot when I was having panic attacks. Since I have not been on medication for 4 years I've gotten sober and this has improved my wellbeing greatly, and I think I'm dealing with some shame about still needing to fall back onto medication for help. I don't know where this shame comes from but if it were a friend or family member needing support for OCD, I would be empathetic to the situation and encourage them to focus on the benefits of meds, but when it comes to myself I just can't seem to find the words to tell myself it is ok to take medication (even though I have taken meds this exact med in the past! argh). I don't see my therapist for a couple weeks and thought I'd reach out to the community for support in the meantime. I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with medications, and how you have overcome it. Thanks

Hello @Penguincat!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I can actually relate to this experience very much!!

I remember being utterly terrified the first time I took medication - I even needed my friend's dad on the phone for support because OCD brain was terrified about all of the potential outcomes.

And you know what?

It was all okay. In fact, it was better.

So I want to validate that how your anxiety-brain is reacting makes so much sense and it's okay to have your apprehensions and to really think about what you're taking and why.

Remember, this doesn't need to be forever, it's just to help right now.

Do you have a safe person who could be with you when you first take them? I can imagine that having someone to co-regulate with would be really helpful.

Let me know your thoughts on this. 🫶

Oh, also - I edited out the medication names you shared, just so it adheres to our community guidelines! You haven't done anything wrong at all, I am just letting you know why your post looks a little different. 🥰

Re: Fear of medication

I can really relate to this @Penguincat you are not alone in this.

I have just been diagnosed with OCD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Depression and I battle with myself every single morning over taking my medication. Somedays OCD brain wins.

My brain likes to come up with all sorts of ways my meds could cause long term harm. I am afraid of being disconnected from my emotions. I'm afraid of putting on weight. I'm afraid of the withdrawals when it's time to come off them. I'm afraid of them having an impact on me cognitively. I've even had nights where my brain has convinced me if I take my meds and my sleep meds then I won't wake up in the morning. None of it has any real logic behind it.

I tried to talk about it with my GP and I don't think I was able to convey what was happening for me properly. I tried to discuss it with a psychologist and she just said that that part of my OCD is going to be tricky to work with.

I don't know where else to go with it, other than to keep trying to take them and to be gentle on myself on the days when OCD brain wins. @AuntGlow

Re: Fear of medication

Thank you for your reply. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this and other people feel the same fears.

I may just start taking them Saturday morning after I finish my studies tomorrow in case it makes me feel woozy.

I’m exhausted mentally. I’m really glad this forum exists.

Thank you for your reply

Re: Fear of medication

Thank you for your reply and the heads up about the medication guidelines.

It might help me to take my meds around someone because the fear of poisoning always crosses my mind. I’ll find someone to take it with initially, or even park near a hospital and take it if I’m freaking out (if I don’t have anyone to help).

Either way I think my therapist will be stoked if I take it and then we can work on the fear and symptoms etc

Thank you again. I appreciate the support

Re: Fear of medication

@Penguincat I totally get the guilt for needing meds. I think some of us grow up receiving messages that we should be able to manage ourselves. I do acknowledge that meds come with side effects but they can also be life changing. I’ve had moments when I wanted to get off meds but I know I wouldn’t be able to manage without them. I’ve been on meds for more than a decade now and I’ve accepted that I’ll need them long term. I also have OCD along with other diagnoses. I’m taking antidepressants along with mood stabilising meds for my bipolar.

@creative_writer Thank you for sharing. I will work on acceptance as although I have only been diagnosed recently, it has been grown with me since childhood.
I think it will take time to accept. But, I’m feeling better about taking it. My brother is diabetic and I am trying to accept that just like he needs medication to survive, so do I. I wish it were easy to just take it.
