Something’s not right

I just need to vent my symptoms because I feel trapped. What should I do?

I just need to vent my symptoms because I feel trapped. What should I do?

I am a husband and a father to a 5 month old daughter who means everything to me. Since her birth my mental state has deteriorated significantly. I love my family deeply but I feel increasingly disconnected frightened and overwhelmed and I’m struggling to stay present with them.

For many years prior I lived with addiction including substances and compulsive behaviours and accumulated significant debt. Over the past 3 to 4 years I have been actively trying to live clean repay debts and do the right thing. I carry a lot of guilt and shame about my past and feel a strong need to make amends.

Recently I’ve been experiencing intense anxiety fear and spiralling thoughts. I feel watched followed or observed especially while driving or in public places. Ordinary events such as cars motorbikes people glancing at me traffic lights colours or timing feel extremely meaningful and directed at me. I interpret these as signals or messages even though I can’t clearly explain who they’re from or what they want.

I feel an overwhelming urge to meet whoever I believe is behind these signs. I feel compelled to follow cars turn around or change routes to not miss an opportunity. At one point I reacted to a perceived signal at an intersection and chased after a vehicle running a red light before stopping. This frightened my wife and made me realise my reactions are becoming unsafe.

Emotionally I feel terrified trapped confused and desperate. I believe that something wants something from me and that if I can just meet them apologise or surrender the fear will stop and I’ll be allowed to live peacefully and raise my daughter. I feel an intense need to beg for forgiveness even though I don’t fully understand from whom or for what.

Because of this I’m constantly scanning my environment for signs and patterns. This makes it very hard to focus work drive or enjoy time with my family. I dissociate zone out and become visibly anxious which my wife notices and worries about. I feel like I’m missing precious moments with my baby which increases my panic and grief.

I’ve had thoughts about avoiding or stopping medication because I fear it will block my ability to perceive these signals even though part of me knows this may not be safe. I’ve contacted Lifeline but it hasn’t felt sufficient for what I’m experiencing. I feel I urgently need psychiatric help not just crisis counselling.

Overall I feel like I’m in a constant state of fight or flight. I’m scared of making the wrong move scared of missing something important and scared that my mental state is putting my family at risk which is the last thing I want. My deepest wish is simply to be present calm and safe with my wife and daughter.

background- I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

the persecution got so bad I left South Australia to move to a small town in WA to avoid it. However it has followed me here. I’m afraid there is no escape hence I’ve been trying to confront them to seek their forgiveness.
guys honestly I just want to raise my daughter. I just fed her avocado puree the other night and she is the sweetest thing.

is anyone out there feeling trapped or can give me some advice? I know I’m probably being tracked as I type this (delusion speaking) but I can’t help it. My mindset has changed.

I don't know if the same terminology is used, but Postpartum psychosis in fathers is a legitimately documented thing

And postpartum worsening of symptoms across multiple domains

Hey @Littlenhuy

A warm welcome and thanks for sharing your experiences with the community!

Sounds like you really love your daughter and want to be the best father that you can be for them! But we can also hear that your mental health has been a struggle for the last few months and its having an impact on your relationship with your wife and feeling present for your daughter. This is not something you have to navigate alone though! We really encourage you to continue reaching out to supports like you already have been. We can share some below that might be helpful for you, but if you feel like you need more urgent care it could be a good idea to talk to your GP soon about what is going on and how best they can support you.

Re: I just need to vent my symptoms because I feel trapped. What should I do?

@Littlenhuy congratulations on fatherhood and turning your life around in recent years.

I hear and understand your concerns, I've experienced comparable but different thoughts when unwell. It sounds as though you're trying to cope as much as possible, and your current medication has generally been helpful . Are you still in touch with the prescriber? It might be time to share your concerns and ask for a review.

How are you sleeping? With a little one maybe it's not been easy. Sleep disturbances are a bit of a red flag for me personally. Actually I have permission to take a little extra medication for a night or two if I need to. And I can reach out to my psychiatrist for advice, but that's getting harder now he's semi-retired.

Being aware that things aren't quite right is very positive and powerful - it's great you've been able to reach out here, and I hope you make friends and get support.

All the best,

Dimity

Thank you so much for your kind support.

im struggling this Christmas a lot. All I want to do is cherish moments with my wife and daughter but my fear and anxiety is taking it all away causing me to disassociate.

I’m getting good sleep, the problem is my way of thinking has changed. I need help on how to correct it. For example when I read something I interpret it to as something else and is directed at me and is persecuting me.

is there some sort of therapy to change my mind? I hope a part of my brain gets erased or something such that I don’t actively scan for entities, people and clues.

thank you in advance

Hello @Littlenhuy

You asked.... "

Yes my friend there are treatments and therapies. Let me explain from my own experience.

My first backstop is medication. I respond to antipsychotics. When I find myself with unusual worries and getting paranoid adjusting my meds usually helps. Sometimes I've lapsed into psychosis and have had hospital stays and higher doses of meds in order to recover. Then I titrate back down to a lower maintenance dose. I do this with the help of my psychiatrist.

The other thing I've realised after many years is that childhood abuse, trauma and bullying have had a big impact on my tendency to catastrophise and feel persecuted. I've learnt that I can get help for this from a psychologist giving me EMDR therapy to remember and deal with the bad memories.

One of my forumite friends here whose experiences may resonate with you has come through with the love of his wife and his strong religious faith. I'll tag @DownMoreThanUp into this conversation.

I hope you're enjoying the festive season! Your daughter's first Christmas must be very special.

@Littlenhuy Hi friend. i have been reading your story and my heart goes out to you. i have been where you are at now my friend. i do remember how hard that time was, and how much i still had to learn in my fight for stability and sanity.

[Disclaimer: the following advice is based on the members experience. This may or may not fit your needs - edited by moderator]

Of utmost importance is to understand that knowing the truth of the matter is FAR more important than the run away feelings you are feeling right now.

@DimityThanks tagging me friend. @Shaz51 @rav3n @NightHedgehog

Step one is therefore surrender! My friend you must accept you are ill and that this is why things have gone wrong NOT because you are not a good person, did bad things, or is to be feared or disliked. This is VERY IMPORTANT to KNOW my friend and more TRUE than your run away feelings scaring and hurting you 24/7!

Step two is finding the RIGHT medication. My friend please do understand that if psychosis keeps going then healing cannot be. It is therefore very important that the psychosis is stopped firstly. For me this has been an epic journey to find something that would treat my psychosis but not dump me rock bottom depressed. This is because i'm schizo-effective and cannot tolerate anti-depressants. A lot of modern anti-psychotics however have this added as ingredient and would trigger me into psychosis or (suicidal) deepest depression within hours of taking them. My understanding is if the medications causes you to have an empty/hollow feeling inside they are NOT going to help long term, for such an inner reality is like a black hole sucking up your good times, no matter how many good moments we have then we cannot enjoy them. Do seek for other medications if that happens.

Thirdly and this is the hardest yet most important part of fighting anxiety. Never suppress your anxious moments, for they will jump at you at the worst possible times. Rather do not agree with your thoughts but hold onto the truth that fear is lying. AND TELL YOURSELF THAT BEING ANXIOUS. for the truth my friend is that fear ought to protect us from harm, think here about fear having stand us away from the edge of a cliff for good reasons, yet in the lies of our ill minds, fear lies to us 24/7. Anxiety uses the things we worry or are scared about in our gone wrong life and become a dangerous catch 22. For what we fear, becomes true fearing it. So facing your fears is the ultimate way overcoming anxious times. Learning to not heed your fears for you know THAT IS FAR safer than heeding them. (To be honest this has for me been the hardest lesson i had to learn, so this step is not easy.)

Fourthly. Do not let your anxious/paranoid thoughts rob you of your supports. i cannot stress enough that my past anxious mindset would always have me in more trouble not less. So your wife and child are not your enemies, or you theirs, but your biggest assets. For my friend this is what you need a lot of and that is love and safety, yet only your home can offer you do 24/7.So love thme as much as you can and accept their love as much as you can. And if guilt is making you feel bad looking at your child, then tell guilt in no uncertain way to STOP keeping you from CULTIVATING loving for the child seeding fears and anxiety instead. By support i also mean professional support. Good counselling helped me enormously understand myself and learning how to deal best with myself a psychotic person who was deepest depressed most of the time.

Now fifthly, and all of these five points are as important as each other, is give yourself love, forgiveness and grace. My friend this is of utmost importance and that is that you forgive yourself being ill. Do not blame the actions of your past bringing out the symptoms but understand ill people need love and care not to be blamed and made to be guilty of the things they cannot help being. For example if your hear the accusing 'voice/thoughts' making you feel bad. DO NOT AGREE but rather confirm loving forgiveness to yourself. Also when you do fall, and do take accusations towards yourself onboard, refuse to feel bad you failed, rather forgive yourself failing, confirm love for yourself, and simply dump the thoughts you had about yourself you should not have agreed with. Honest my friend rather than what those HORRIBLE feelings cast on you keep giving good things to yourself in return. So if the anxiety makes you feel you have not enough love, do not fear that, but rather give yourself more love loving yourself enough to resist such thoughts and feelings to dwell in your heart.

Sixthly meditate on your own fears and anxieties, not to bring yourself down, but to confirm to yourself that you care enough to fear things going wrong. So understanding your own anxieties, and forgiving yourself them, helps enormously staying in the truth when anxiety hits hardest. i think one of the biggest lessons i had to learn was to realise that more often than not i was anxious because i could not do what others needed me to do. Things i felt i HAD to do! Things i was obliged to be but was not! So truly it was loving responsibility in my heart the run away anxiety was abusing in me, so rather than helping my loved ones heeding it, such anxious thoughts wewre betraying me and them inside of me lying about things 24/7.

And finally Journal your symptoms and important events/Victories my friend. Write them all down and score them three times a day for at least 6 months. i did much longer myself. It is unbelievable helpful to see the EVIDENCE rather than be dragged off by your depressed or anxious feelings into seeing things untrue. So discovering and scoring symptoms is one of the best ways to see from day to day how things really are, rather than how extreme moments can make you think and feel about your life not in any kind of truth to be but rather destroy the good life you did have denying it.

i hope this can be helpful to you. Please do understand you are very unwell and need love, forgiveness and care not judgement or punishment.

For me my faith in Jesus really helped me most. i do not know if you have such a faith, but if you do, i can discuss this with you from a Christian perspective. A perspective which has for me been the ultimate help fighting my inner demons. Let me know and i will tag you in our Christian chat thread.

Sending loving courage your way my friend.
