I feel crazy even posting this

I feel crazy even posting this

Hi Saneforums,

I've been really busy with my studies so I haven't participated in the forums as much as I'd like but I've returned now.

I've been through something that I don't even want to share with my doctor and therapist because I fear they'd think I was psychotic. I feel comfortable sharing it here in relative anonymous manner however. I thank you in advance for any advice.

So I have suffered from Sleep Apnoea since 2012 and have had it treated successfully at home with a CPAP machine. So my doctor ordered a routine "sleep study" in the sleep lab of the local hospital. I was very reluctant to go as I'm freaked out about staying at a hospital. I realised it's for the best as poor sleep can effect mental health greatly and as you know my mental health hasn't been the best in 2016 (but is improving in 2017).

So it basically involves the sleep technician hooking you up with electrodes and sensors over your body, then hooking you up to a CPAP machine and they watch you sleep through a camera and monitor your vitals. It's hard to actually sleep because it's a strange environment and you need absolute trust in the technicians because obviously you're in a vulnerable situation.

So part of my OCD is severe hypochondria and empathy with people that have neurological disorders, empathy that causes me to want to exclude myself from any situation that will make me think about said disorders. Well the technician told me that the majority of patients they have are people with sleep apnoea both overweight and normal weight. But sometimes they have very sick people, people with respiratory disease or motor neurone disease. They want to try to improve their sleep. So anyway my OCD was completely triggered in many different ways and obviously I felt bad about it. I didn't want to sleep in the bed but I confronted my OCD and did anyways with wires all over me. I tried to sleep but kept thinking about the plight of those who may have used that bed before me. Some may have been helpless, it was sad to think about. So I was panicking and my heart racing, it took me two hours to half sleep and I felt trapped by the wires. I wanted to rip them off and run away. My OCD started getting worse and I thought "what if a demon or spirit causes people to have these horrible neurological disorders" and I had a picture of a being with a sad distorted face in my mind. I had further OCD thoughts worrying that such a being would try to attach itself to me. So after a horrible night with these thoughts the doctor came in to do the blood arterial gas test (where they take blood from an artery, yay!) I was able to leave the hospital. I'm just obsessed with these thoughts and am worried. As stated I am worried about sharing this with my doctor, I feel crazy. I said a prayer in the car on the way home to see if it would ease the thoughts.

I had some horrible dream riddled awakenings in the study but just to be clear I didn't hear or see anything that wasn't there.

So I'm wondering what I should do? Is this just OCD? Thanks for any advice.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@Dothemo. What a hard experience for you to go through. I think it's always good to explain to medical personnel about possible reactions you may have in certain situations. Eg: at the dentist recently I advised them I may cry during the procedure - but not to worry & to continue with their work and just ignore my tears - as it was my way of dealing with the pent up anxiety. This worked well.
You might like to say - please don't tell me about other people who use this service. You don't even need to explain anything about your MI if you don't wish to. Just that you don't want to hear about others.
This way you can try and protect yourself from further worries.
With regards to your thoughts thay night & following - they sound horrifying. No wonder you are struggling with this.
Are you worried that you may be experiencing hallucinations or paranoia? Is this why you don't want to speak to your psych about this?
It may be related to your OCD. It may be a 'normal' response for people experiencing a situation very much out of their control. Or it could be something else.
I think it is important to share this information with your psych team - as they can help you work through this and not become fixated on it - as can happen with OCD.
There is nothing to be embarrassed about. It sounds like a 'thought' has become 'stuck' in your brain. Work with your team to remove this worry.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

Hi @Dothemo,

It's great that you feel you can share here on the SANE Forums.

It sounds like you are dealing with so much right now, and that you have been feeling scared and confused about the experiences you recently had whilst getting a sleep test.

I would highly recommend that you also reach out to your doctor and your therapist regarding the worries you are having about your mental health. I know that it can be very scary to reach deeper into an area of your experience that you do not yet have a name for. However, it is incredibly important to access professional support and treatment when you can, so that you can treat anything that needs to be treated, and begin to understand this new experience for what it is. It also might help if you end up finding out--this is another side of your OCD!

The SANE forum is a great place to gather support and care, but cannot provide the type of specialised care required when you are not feeling well (for whatever reason).

It sounds like this has been and is a scary time for you because you don't know yet exactly what is going on. It can really help to tackle these fears by reaching out to those who know your history and can treat, diagnose and prescibe.

Of course please keep using us as your sounding board, @Dothemo!

I hope this is helpful!

Take care x

Hi @utopia and @Squirrel

Thanks for your response to this older post. I took your advice and went to my GP. He said that it is still just my OCD and that I am not psychotic. He introduced a bit of lightnes into it by laughing at my discription of when the machine malfunctioned and the lights flashed brightly red - waking me up and scaring the **** out of me (I'm not sure if I shared that in the original post). Well it looks like I pushed my OCD fears further which I think is a good thing by going through the sleep study. Thanks again.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@Dothemo. How do you feel knowing this is part of your OCD journey? Do you feel relief?
I'm glad you spoke to your doctor anout this. It's not always easy to do. And can be scary talking about new things - especially if there is a fear it may give you another diagnosis. So well done.
Did your doctor give you some action plans on how to overcome or stop this new symptom?

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

Hi, @utopia

Well I'm relieved in the way because I couldn't cope with Anti-psychotic medications if I had a psychotic disorder (I've tried some latest generation ones for anxiety - doesn't agree with me like most meds!). But quite honestly the OCD has now caused as much suffering as something like schitzophrenia could. My doctor didn't give me any advice regarding treatment, I think I really need to save up some money to see my psychologist again. Thankyou once again for the kind thoughts.

Just wondering and slightly side topic but do you like Parrots? Going by your avatar I was wondering if you did.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@Dothemo. I love parrots and the White Cockatoo is my favorite bird. When I go up to my mountain to meditate - I can hear them screeching and carrying on. I call them my brothers. They are majestic birds.
Do you like birds? There is a thread on the Forum for bird lovers.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@utopia, I love them too! It's funny, they remind me of the transition into adulthood and maturation.

I hope you don't mind if I share a story with you?

My mental illness was much worse when I was a child, although it causes much more distress and pain now - I can function much better 'in society' then before (which means it's harder to get help now also!). When I was 17yo I was given an independant living unit in a very lovely bushy suburb in Canberra. It had a nice backyard with a hillhoist washing line. I placed a flat piece of wood about a meter sqaured on the centre of the hills hoist. Everyday I would go down to the supermarket and buy variants of Home Brand bird seed, including sunflower seed. I'd place the seed on the wood on the washing line in the mornings and at the same time I'd get all kinds of beautiful parrots of all sizes and colours including cockatoos coming down and covering the large washing line for a giant feast. I would watch them and the whole thing was devine. I loved it and so did my feathered friends. My favourite were the large king parrots. Sometimes there were in excess of 40 parrots at a time! I honestly didn't know where they all came from! I wish I had a backyard now so I could do the same thing!! To me this is indicative of good mental health. Your avatar reminds me of that! Anyway, hope you're having a great weekend!

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@Dothemo. Great story. King Parrots are stunning. My brother used to leave food out for them all the time. One day - his daughter - then only 3 years old - put seed in her hand and held her arm out. A King Parrot landed on her arm ready to eat. But he was too heavy. So she dropped her arm, bird food and all. Lol.
I wonder if you go to a park at a set time everyday, if the birds will get used to you feeding them there. Although not sure what birds you will find in your neighborhood.

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

@utopia they are certainly on the heavier side aren't they?! That is a good idea, I think they would definitely get used to it. I think birds are quite smart and watch people, they'd know when I would be coming to feed them. There is a place in Canberra called the "Canberra walk in aviary", they have all sorts of parrots there and provide sliced apple and live meal worms for a small fee. I think I'm going to visit there tomorrow and get my parrot feeding fix 🙂

Re: I feel crazy even posting this

That sounds like a great place to spend a few hours @Dothemo.
I've been watching the birds here this afternoon. They are riding and playing in the air currents (strong winds today). Fantastic to wwatch.
Enjoy your day tomorrow.
