Trauma and 'feeling valid'

Trauma and 'feeling valid'

I’m really struggling with the idea of “trauma history” after being diagnosed with CPTSD. My psych and the assessor who did my evaluation will speak about me having a trauma history. I honestly feel like I can’t even use that language to describe myself or what I’ve experienced. I don’t think that my experiences or “trauma” were “bad enough”. I feel like those experiences weren’t severe enough and the fact that I developed CPTSD from them just means I’m weak.

I would appreciate some advice or ways of challenging this. I’ve spent so much of my time chasing ‘validity’ or wanting to get worse to be ‘valid’ and I keep getting more and more diagnoses, and they all keep getting more and more complex and it still feels like it wasn’t ever bad enough or that I’m not suffering enough.

Hi @Mothlet, I understand the feeling of your trauma not being bad enough.
The way I see it is if it is traumatic enough to cause PTSD or in your case CPTSD then the trauma is valid. Also all people experience trauma differently and that’s multitudes of different traumas and each trauma is valid.
You’re not weak for developing CPTSD, it’s a reaction to trauma.

You don’t need to get worse to be valid, since you are already valid in your experience.

Re: Trauma and 'feeling valid'

This is not uncommon for folks with C-PTSD @Mothlet I think cos for me, none of my 'little traumas' felt like trauma, they just felt like life. Life that I had to get used to.

You're not weak. You're responding rationally to your life, your circumstances, and your pain.

@Snow_Leopard is right, you are already valid.

Re: Trauma and 'feeling valid'

@Mothlet, similar to what @Jynxsaid, my traumas were all just parts of my life. A life I learnt to live in. A life that, even though I knew was different to other people, was my ‘normal’.

Like lots of others with CPTSD, it’s the impact of how those traumas now affect my life.

your life and experiences are valid. Please don’t let anyone tell you differently.

you are not weak. Quite the opposite in fact. You are a survivor who has a strong nature inside you

Re: Trauma and 'feeling valid'

hi @Mothlet i was involved with something when was fifty that put me in front of a psychiatrist first time in life and was diagnosed and medicated for PTSD and anxiety .

i thought PTSD was only war related .

once i trusted psychologists and talked about past it was CPTSD just like you i thought things growing up that were not liked was part of life and figured there's always kids doing it harder and there were i always had a lunch.

over two years later i still struggle with writing it on forms or saying it out loud when im answering whats my diagnosis questions.

like you said it feels weak or like playing poor me card.

once i lowered my own resistance it was more relatable but no easier to admit to.

its the stigma around it from people making false claims and medias involvement that make it hard to accept and talk about i think. my thoughts were same as yours your not alone.

i ask myself would it of been trauma if was listened to before woke started?

was whats seen as trauma now seen as trauma by clinicians 30yrs ago even?

the forums have been good for me and as you can see in the understanding and support offered already there's a lot of lived experience on SANE with no judgement.

happy to talk more anytime as are all i have known on here.
