Thinking of walking away from daughter and grandaughter

Thinking of walking away from daughter and grandaughter

I am new to this forum this is my first post and I feel terrible even posting this but this is where I am at. I am hoping there are other people out there who may experience similar.

I have a 25 year old daughter who has a history of suicide attempts, drug use and abusive relationships. I have held a lot of compassion for her and understanding around this being a trauma respnse to her history including childhood sexual abuse. I have had to set very strong boundaries with her in the past to keep her safe and myself to the point she was homeless because having her at home was no longer safe due to so many things including her being abusive and high risk taking behaviours and associating with high risk people. We both come from a long history of trauma in our family so she has no one else but me and I have no contact with other family either as its not safe to do so and they are very judgemental towards her struggles.

She now has a 2 year old daughter who she struggles to care for and is consistently trying to get me to take on more care of brcause she frequentlyneeds a break. . Im happy to go to her house and help with cleaning and bathing the night time routine but if I dont have my grandaughter every week overnight my daughter becomes unbearable to be around. My grandaughter is also in full time care so my daughter gets a break 5 days out of 7. My daughter tells me she doesnt have to thank me for what I do that Im her mother I should just be doing these things. That she shouldn't have to care about me because Im the mother I should be caring more for her. Im sure other people have experienced the years of attending to crisis situations to being in their childs good books then being the focus of their childs rage and this is the situation I have been in for so many years I just dont feel I have it in me to keep supporting her anymore. I eat well, I go to the gym go to therapy but have no friendships at present every time I try to start a friendship or relationship my daughters needs out weigh everything and I find other people dont understandthe situation. . My daughter will threaten to self harm to get me to respond immediately. She had child protection involvement previously so she wont allow me to phone emergency services to get her support she tells me I will never see my grandaughter again if I do. As hard as it would be to walk away from my granddaughter who I just love so much and daughter I just feel like I want peace I want a life where I dont have to keep responding to her crisis its incredibly draining I feel exhausted. She has been in therapy for about 6 months which has been good for her she is now engaged in TAFE has stopped using drugs as often but she still targets me frequently.Im sick of having to withstand her abuse I have a history of being abused and I work in domestic violence and sexual assault which I love but I dont want to be abused in my own life anymore. I really need to focus on work Im 50 I need to think about setting myself up for some type of quality in retirement in 17 years. I have been in therapy for around 20 years and was a yoga teacher Ive tried very hard to set up good things in my life but I can't maintain it. My daughter can be verbally abusive and extremely manipulative its just never ending. I feel like my daughter would take anything from me with absolutely no regard for me or my feelings and genuinely think that this was her right to have it because Im here to serve her. Is anyone else going through anything similar? If so Id love to connect or hear your insights. Thankyou for reading this 🙏🏾

Hello @EJ
A warm welcome and thanks for sharing your experiences with the community! ✨

Sounds like you and your daughter have both been through a lot and you are doing all you can to support her and move forward with your own life. Great to hear that you are getting your own support through this as well! It sounds like this is a really heavy decision for you to make, trying to balance wanting to see your granddaughter and maintain your boundaries and safety in your relationship with your daughter.

It takes courage to share your experiences with the community, and you are being really brave reaching out to your peers.

I'm sure that the community will have some insights to share with you soon! In the mean time I wanted to share a couple of resources with you that might be a helpful starting place. I can see from your post that you work in the domestic violence and sexual assault spaces so you might already be aware but just in case!

Hey @EJ, thank you for sharing your experiences with the community!

I sounds like you are going through a tough time with your daughter and trying to care for your grand daughter. Your daughter sounds like she has been through a lot and perhaps carries a lot of trauma from the abuse she was subjected to as a child. @NightHedgehog provided some great resources for you but I am not sure if you know about the Blue Knot Foundation but you possibly do as you work in Domestic and Family Violence and sexual assault spaces. They may be able to offer some support to your daughter.

You are possilby being subject to socail abuse by your daughter in that she threatens to cut you of from contact with your grand daughter. You might find it beneficial to have a look at this website about family violence. https://www.victimsofcrime.vic.gov.au/family-violence

It can be also really important to take care of yourself when we are supporting others as our own mental health can be affected. There are supports available specifically for carers if you would like to check them out: https://www.carersvictoria.org.au/

It's really brave of you to sharing your experiences and be vulnerable with the community and I encourage you to continue to stay connected and reach out when you need.

Take care

Hi @EJ ,

I've read your post a few times.

Thank you for sharing your situation with so much detail.

I'm replying as someone who has worked in emergency accommodation for children and young people in care.

I don't know that it's possible to lessen the load of your situation.

But I wanted to say the difference you have made for your grandchild cannot be put into words.

@Realness thankyou for saying that. I also worked in resi care when I first started my career for a few years and also did a few years working in child protection I understand what you are saying. Its just the ongoing nature of it is wearing me so thin. I know my granddaughter needs me I know my daughter does as well its just such an ongoing uphill battle. Thankyou though I truly know what you mean even just one resilient relationship in a child's life makes a significant difference for life🌟

@EJ

Thanks for the reply.

As I read your post I thought of the emergency instructions they give at the beginning of a flight. The instructions are to put your own air supply mask on first. Then a person can help others with their mask.

I wish you wisdom in knowing the time to put your own mask on and how to do it.

Re: Thinking of walking away from daughter and grandaughter

Hi @EJ

I know that you have tried very hard with your daughter and have reached a limit where you don't think you can handle much more. I just wanted to share with you my experience. I was a good kid that experienced childhood trauma. I ended up with mental illness. My mother rejected me and broke off the relationship because she said I was "too hard"! I had three children who she refused to be involved with at all. She said that she had raised six kids of her own and was not going to help with mine. She probably saw my kids a total of 6 times. I haven't heard from my mother in 17 years and it has been very painful for me. Sometimes you just need your mum. I still experience pain from her decision. She also doesn't talk to any of my siblings. I guess it's just a her thing. I think that breaking off the relationship should be your last resort. If your daughter is endangering her child maybe the child would be better off somewhere else. It does sound, though like your daughter is starting to make progress in making some better decisions. Maybe you can put in some more boundaries with her rather than walking away completely? Some tough love might be in order around making her do her child's evening routine.
