As a mother and carer

As a mother and carer

What I truly despise with neurotypical poeple and even family. They eventually learn they dont need or have to acknowledge my daughter. New people, acquaintances, I see the pattern; they dont need to acknowledge my daughter. Even my son, even my siblings, even her cousins even her nieces, even her aunts and uncles. It makes me cry and cracks my heart. A counsellor said to me, your daughter may actually be ok and content with the fact. Less pressure on her. But I dont know, it really hurts me that they do this. There are one or 2 people that try. I'm feeling really miserable

Re: As a mother and carer

i'm so sorry to hear that your family and other people in your life don't acknowledge your daughter @Dark_Olena.

i can see that you love and care for your daughter immensely, and it must be heart-breaking for mothers to see their children mistreated. although i don't condone mistreating family members, i do think it's really brave of your daughter to find contentment and not allow her family members treatment impact her too much. that must've taken her a lot of strength.

we can't always change others, but we can change ourselves. perhaps empowering your daughter to not care about other people's opinions might help?
she's lucky to have a mum like you who fights for her 💙

@Dark_Olena it takes a lot of strength to be immune to what other people think of you. I've had it during my lifetime it used to bother me but now I dont care if people like me, dislike me, hate me or sideline me. I think it happens when you get older. Popularity is something that is ephemeral. I look at it in terms of character building even though lots of people hated me or ignored me due to my diagnosis. To be honest I dont care! Its the greatest gift you can give yourself not to be moved by what other people think, to be able to go about your day and not be affected by what anyone elses opinions are. They aren't thinking of your daughter 24/7 and you don't know what goes on inside these peoples brains, its more to do with their discrimination than anything than to do with your daughter. I read the book: "The Four Agreements" many years ago and it is how to cultivate inner strength in the face of negative opinions, derision and hate. It was an easy read but the practice is difficult to implement as you need to rewire your own personal assumptions about yourself. But once youre done its easy peasy. And you know what? Life can be good and you can just dismiss other peoples behaviours and get on with living life.
