lack of options for eating disorder treatment

lack of options for eating disorder treatment

there is literally not a single treatment place that treats b1nge eating disorder in australia and finding a private psych who treats it is just as fruitless. sure you can call the butterfly foundation and they can tell you that yes the situation does suck but that is about it there is no one to help. even though b1nge eating disorder is more common that anorexia and bulimia all the treatment places only focus on weight restoration for if you start out underweight if you are overweight with an eating disorder god help you because no one will even believe you to begin with. my eating disorder is literally driving me to an early grave but nobody will help me with it and everyone just says sorry that is too bad come back when you are underweight.

Re: lack of options for eating disorder treatment

hi @Eden1919 I hear you! When I was still going through EDNOS, I wasn't able to access public health treatment because I didn't have enough of either bulimia or anorexia symptoms and I was "normal" weight. I found working with a dietitian a next good option. There are private eating disorder clinics including one in Melbourne that specialises in b!nge eating (Glynn Mind Clinic), but unsure where you are based. It might also be worth checking out Eating Disorders Victoria, as they have some useful information on their website as well as the recovery support they provide, including peer support sessions. The Butterfly Foundation is an okay service, but they really seem to focus on anorexia and then bulimia as their secondary focus. Everything else is a bit sidelined. Which is interesting to me, because I suspect that more people struggle with an eating disorder that is harder to classify than the "straight" anorexia or bulimia diagnosis.

Re: lack of options for eating disorder treatment

Hey @Eden1919 totally hearing you on this one! As you said, unless you are significantly underweight and battling anorexia, there is pretty much zero support. I’m diagnosed atypical anorexia and have never been underweight with it but have definitely struggled with the physical complications of anorexia unfortunately, but I’m always just medically stabled and pushed out the door. It really does suck. I often believe that all my supports just don’t believe most of the time.

Do you have a good dietician? My dietitian that I’ve been seeing for years is amazing. Most of the time I actually get more out of my sessions with her than I’ve ever got from my psychologists.

last year I participated in a schema therapy group for eating disorders and it was really good. Maybe that’s something that you could focus your psychologist searches on? Someone that does that?

But yeah there ain’t much help available:(

Re: lack of options for eating disorder treatment

@balance37 @Bow thanks both of you i am sorry you have had similar struggles it really sucks suffering so much and not being able to access any help simply because of outdated beliefs and stigma around what eating disorders look like i was told by an eating disorder specialist that i had OSFED but no one believes that because i am overweight despite majority of my weight being due to antipsychotic medication side effects but again no body cares because if you are overweight you must just be lazy and a glutton. i do have a good dietician but she always just tells me i need to eat more regularly which even if that is true i am not really able to do at the moment anyway i just wish there was some actual decent help out there cause even the options for anorexia are slim all they do if feed you back to a healthy weight and then send you home with no psychological help. anyway idk what to do but something needs to be done.
