I needed to talk with my GP
I went to see my GP this morning. What a waste of time. It's been brewing for a while. I never feel understood. He doesn't communicate with me directly but spends his time, sideways to me, putting together a report on his computer. I try to develop a rapport with him, but I feel like he can't be bothered with anything more tedious than writing a prescription, which won't solve the reason for my visit. I'm just taking up his time. He has simple suggestions for complex matters and thinks he's being helpful. I'm not looking for coffee and a chat, just craving the feeling that I'm actually understood after some years of consultations with him. I used to see a GP every few years but lately have seen him more regularly because there is always unfinished, misunderstood, business to try to resolve. Sometimes it would be beneficial to just talk with one's GP, to feel understood, to help him understand that I'm not the person he thinks he's relating to. I thought that was part of their role—to maintain the function and wellbeing of that section of the community they serve. I feel so frustrated with him. It seems to me that Pty. Ltd. clinics and computerisation have depersonalised doctor-patient relationships. Sure, I can change GPs, and will, but it didn't help during the last several changes. I am left wondering if they have a clue how many mistakes they are making or if they even care.
