Psychedelics in Healing
Not long ago, the idea of plant medicines or psychedelic-assisted therapy for trauma recovery would have been met with immediate dismissal in many circles. Yet I'm witnessing something different now - a gradual shift from skepticism to genuine curiosity, particularly within veteran communities.
Australia has positioned itself as one of the first countries to formalise certain psychedelic treatments through TGA rescheduling. While challenges around accessibility and cost remain significant ($20,000-$40,000 for treatment programs), the fact that these conversations are happening at policy level signals something meaningful.
I personally feel this isn't about promoting a singular solution or suggesting psychedelics are right for everyone. Rather, it's about recognising that:
- People are exploring alternatives when traditional approaches haven't created the change they're seeking
- Some are finding these experiences facilitate access to held grief and shutdown parts of themselves in ways that felt beyond cognitive processing alone
- The research base is growing, with organisations collaborating with universities to document outcomes
- These aren't quick fixes - they require proper preparation, safe containment, experienced guidance, and ongoing integration work
I am most interested by the 'Integration Piece' - in these conversations I am having, the medicine itself isn't the transformation. Lasting change comes from what happens afterward - the small, consistent daily practices that leverage neuroplasticity and break default patterns. The body work. The nervous system regulation. The community support. The embodied healing and self re-connection.
Questions for This SANE Veteran Community - I'm curious about your perspectives and experiences:
- Are you noticing this shift in attitude toward psychedelic therapies?
- Have you explored or considered these approaches in your own healing process?
- What concerns or questions come up for you around this topic?
- What would need to be true for you to feel these could be safe, beneficial options?
I want to emphasise...this is about opening dialogue, not advocating for any particular path. Your nervous system, your body, your choice. Always.
Resources Worth Exploring - For those keen to learn more:
- Heroic Hearts Project Australia
- AMAP (Australian peak body for psychedelic advocacy)
- IR Science (research on plant medicines and retreat outcomes)
Whatever path to healing resonates for you - whether it includes plant medicines, somatic (body) practices, nervous system work, or other modalities - what matters is finding approaches that honor your unique experience and create sustainable change from the inside out.
I am keen to hear your thoughts, questions, or experiences below....
