Leaving hospital in a few days

Leaving hospital in a few days

Well after a month of hospital food and group therapy, I am leaving hospital on Friday. I sincerely hope that there isn't a relapse anytime soon. I am still hearing violent commanding voices, but there is only so much that medication and therapy in a safe environment can do. The rest of the journey is up to me now. My doctor was concerned that I would have minimal support in the community and would like for me to have a case manager (but that is unheard of in the private system where I am now). I refuse to go into the public system simply for the purposes of a case manager, as I find the public system has treated me rather badly all in all. Nevertheless, a referral has been done for a support worker in the PHaMS program. I've had these before and they have helped, so here's hoping eh?

I am also looking at volunteering my time at the local public psychiatric unit as a peer support worker. I have the relevant qualifications and training, so I just need to do the induction at the hospital and then I can be set loose in the unit. My doctor thinks it will help me to do some positive work with people somehow.

My mood has picked up the point I rate myself a 6 out 10 (10 being absolutely ecstatic and 1 being suicidal). I am kind of proud of that achievement as I have worked really hard this admission to bring about positive change in my life, for a lasting reprieve from depression and that awful black dog which sometimes threatens to overwhelm me. I still have the voices (as I said before), but the paranoia and anxiety surrounding that has disappeared for now.

Anyway, cut a long story short, I am about as well as I get, so it's high time I went back into the world, soldiering on.

Thanks for reading this post, Q xx

Oh @Queenie, didn't know you've been unwell. Glad you've picked up and that being in hospital has helped. Those 'voices' must be so hard, wish they'd figure out how to stop them being do invasive. But good the distress of anxiety has lifted.
You are so open and clear about your condition, really helps me understand my two brothers - thank you.
Understand you staying g in the private system - good you can afford it - but I was wondering why a public case worker can't be utilised as well. Silly red tape I guess.
Glad you feel good about discharge, good yo see you 🙂

hello @Queenie @Appleblossom

Good news that you are thinking about your hospital exit.

You are approaching this with honesty and are aware of how you are feeling which I see as very positive.

As far as volunteering, with all of the qualifications and training, I am sure they will welcome you with open arms.

You will be a great asset as you know first hand about some of the struggles.

Very pleased for you, feel proud and good luck on your new journey xx

Brilliant news @Queenie. I do hope you're feeling comfortable about going back in to the community. You certainly sound heaps better.

I like the idea of volunteering in the psych ward. So many inpatients get no visitors and often those who do visit have little if any concept of how distressing it can be.

Wishing you well. Keep up the hard work. I reckon a 6 is a good place to stay.

Re: Leaving hospital in a few days

Thanks everyone for your encouraging reply, your words mean a lot.

I feel ready to be released into the 'world' again, but at the same time I think I will struggle a little at first. I only have leave from the psych unit with a family member (or my gf) and whenever we visit a crowded place, it overwhelms me. I hear enough voices without having to listen to several hundred more in close confines. It's something I have to work on, as my gf is very sociable and likes me to go lots of places with her. We are going to the footy next weekend so that will challenge me I guess. I also have prn medications to take these days in order to help prevent another psychiatric crisis. I've not had this before now. Also, there have been a few modifications made to the home environment in order to prevent me from harming myself. I'm not sure entirely how to take this as it means I am to be a little more dependent upon my gf and her Mum than I would have liked. I've always loved my independence, but I guess I need to accept that I do need help and that she is the right one to help me.

Also, it has been agreed upon, that if I mention 'respite' in the future, help is to be sought sooner rather than later. The crisis that ensued from delaying a respite admission, could have been catastrophic with me feeling very suicidal. I guess we have both learned some valuable lessons there.

Anyhoo, I've off to bed now as my medications are kicking in and the nurses want me to turn off my light and go to sleep.

Cheerio, Q xx
