Mood stabiliser meds. The journey to stabilising on em?!

Mood stabiliser meds. The journey to stabilising on em?!

Heylo folx,

I'm 4 weeks into re-introducing, after over 5 years break, mood stabilisers. I did so cos life was getting a bit off the richter, and roller coaster. With the lows being the hardest bit. Wondering if anyone else has been on this voyage (I imagine yep) and what your experiences have been? All my psych specified was 'give it 6 weeks' and 'if not, we'll add an antidepressant'.

How long did it take for your ups n downs to ease into a more gentle flow, if / when? I've chatted to a few peers and they've let me know it can take a while for brain chemistry to eqilibrium out. I remember it can take about 6 weeks for a med to leave one's system, so makes kinda sense going in to be similar time span. Just needed a hope hit?! Bit of a nasty pasty journey.

Anyways, today I'm doing pretty good, so felt in this pause of relative peacefullness to resource up, and ask others for your input!?

Thanks kindly preemptively.....

I have found that it definitely depends on what you are taking, I personally find that first month really rough but then things tend to even out after - and its hard to notice the positive changes straight away but sometimes stepping away and going 'huh, i actually got out of bed twice this week instead of not at all' helped me notice some changes.

Hey @simplyme

I also found it really depends on the medication. Some medications work incredibly quickly; others take a month to a couple months. It really just depends on the way your body metabolises the medication. Make sure you are following the advice of your psych but speak up if it’s not working for you. There are quite a few different medications that can work.

Best of luck!

Thanks @Lapis_Anteater for ur words. It's a med that I was relatively stable, moods wise at least, on previously. Came off hoping to begin all over med reductions, yet here I am reintroducing both it, and others, a few years down track. Kinda disappointing, but whatevs works eh? So hopefully I'll get there again with this. Timings allowed for....

@simplyme

I’m glad the medication work for you in the past. I hope it continues to be successful for you now. Reducing meds can be challenging and it is definitely disappointing when it doesn’t work out. I think it is important to remember that there is no shame in needing medication. It should really be the same as taking medication for any chronic physical illness.

I wish you all the best.
