Smells that arent really there

Smells that arent really there

Hi ive been meaning to ask..... has anyone that has gad or depression or ptsd especially. Has anyone smelt things that arent actually there maybe things that associate with a specific event.

For example today i was at home by myself and im not sure what set it off but my nausea got bad and i started smelling like a blood smell. I looked everywhere and couldnt find a source but it stuck to me like super glue.
my sister was attacked by a dog and there was blood everywhere esp on me. Is it possible that it was like a memory or soemthing?

Sometimes when you vomit or get nausea you can get a blood taste/ metallic taste in your mouth. Because your mouth and nose and all that stuff is conected you can full on smell it. Not sure the science behind it but I'm assuming it's just your belly being pissed off.

It always happens to my husband and he's in perfect health. And I get it a bit to but I got GERD so I'm assuming mine is beause of that for some of the times. I do find though being a girl my sense of smell can be very hightened to when it's close and that time of the month. Drives my husband insane because I won't let him eat eggs or fish if I'm in the house at that time lol!

Re: Smells that arent really there

This topic has significate impact on me, I have lost my since of smell some time ago, it’s a since that’s has so many memories attached that trigger the good and bad feelings. I have lost those memories, the smell of a barbeque, a new baby, the sea..etc..

Their so much support out there for loss of sight, hearing, the since of smell connects as with people and nature without it I feel detached.

Enjoy all the smells and embrace the sensation with mindfulness.

That is really true. There is a lot of support for people who are blind and deaf but not for one of our other main scenes smell. I've never thought of that before. Oh trust me I never take it for granted and thanks for reminding me.

its abit hard to explain... i was sitting in my loung rooom and started to smell a blood smella but couldnt source the smell at all and for no reaso should i really be smelling it. i thought it was really strrange. i thought maybe it was like a past pts memory appearing in the form of a smell and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to that?

Re: Smells that arent really there

Hi @Former-Member, I think your gut feeling that these strange smells are associated to PTSD. It surprised me recently to learn that we can relive the FEELINGS of PTSD without the cognitive memory connection, so, I figure - why not smells? I experience this from time to time - the most troubling is old man pipe tobacco smoke smell. I can't connect this but instinctively sense its bad. A more pleasant smell I get from my ime to time is 711 Cologne - my manna loved it. And lavender water - associated with a great aunt.

hi @Former-Member

its really weird. and was a weird experience so maybe it is possible that is a memory oming out in a smell which really doesnt surprise me anymore.
