NDIS Access Denied

NDIS Access Denied

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out as the primary carer for my son, who has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia/Schizoaffective disorder. After a journey spanning several years, we've just received notice from the NDIS that he does not qualify for support.

While they acknowledge the permanency of his condition, they've stated that not all treatment options have been explored in relation to his functional impairment. This has left us feeling confused — especially given our extensive engagement with psychosocial services, both past and present, many of which are well known to members of this community.

I'm really unsure what more we can do. We've followed every recommendation, pursued every avenue, and tried to ensure my son receives the best possible care. If anyone has faced a similar situation or has advice on how to navigate this, I’d be incredibly grateful to hear your thoughts.

Thanks in advance for any support or insight.

Re: NDIS Access Denied

Hey @Squarehead, thank you for sharing your experiences with the community!

Sounds like you have worked really hard to get your son the the support he needs and it must be challenging to sit with the result. I have heard that it is really challenging to get accepted by the NDIS in the community and from people I support. You are very brave and reslient for reaching out to your peers here and sharing your story. I can be really hard to be vulnerable and talk about our challenges with a new community.

I have heard of some people contacting a NDIS Support Coordinator and they may be able to assist you and your son with another application or to maybe review the result. I have not done this myself and I am not sure if this is something that you have already tried. But it may be worth looking into if you would like some extra support with your NDIS application in the future. You can find a Support Coordinator using this link: https://www.ndis.gov.au/participants/working-providers/find-registered-provider/provider-finder

Thanks and for sharing your experiences and I encourage you to continue to reach out to your peers!

Take care

Re: NDIS Access Denied

Hey @Squarehead

I don't have an magic solutions but I thought I would drop you a line and say a couple of things. I applied and was knocked back from the NDIS at least twice, and maybe 3 times....can't quite remember now. I know I applied more than once. I was finally grant the NDIS on the final time I applied because, while I was initially knocked back on that attempt, my case manager knew to ask for an "internal review". That's how I was granted the NDIS. Like your son I have schizoaffective disorder, as well as a spinal injury (although I can walk thanks to neurosurgery). My primary diagnosis is the schizoaffective disorder. I would also ask if you have someone helping with the application? An NGO was supposed to help with mine, but they were hopeless and my case manager took over. She was really good at knowing how to tick their boxes. I know it's really tough to get on the NDIS, I wish you the best of luck with your journey.

Re: NDIS Access Denied

Fingers crossed for you @Squarehead .

I dont have any experience or advice beyond what someone i know told me - which is similar to @RiverSeal and @Ainjoule advice --- that its about know what to write and how to frame the application to tick all the boxes and say it the right way. And that specialist ndis application people can help with it.

I think it sucks that it is like that - not catering for people to really be able to apply themselves and work with the scheme to be assessed properly regardless of application skills. But sadly it sounds like it is.

I haven't applied for NDIS because I see how others like your son and many others who need the financial support more than I are even rejected. 😭

Re: NDIS Access Denied

Hey @Squarehead ,

I noticed you mentioned that you included all the psychosocial supports your son has been involved in. Did you include the medical/psychological supports too? Is that what they are looking for?

Thanks for reply

Supplied Medical reports from Psychiatrists, Case Managers, Doctors, as you would be aware it’s a revolving door of treatment so I/we have kept the reports over the journey .

Re: NDIS Access Denied

@Squarehead hi hun this is what I know from peoples dealings with NDIS applications (people who know how the system works) you must keep fighting. Dont give up. Make sure that all the worst aspects of your son's diagnosis is stated in the applications. Your sons condition must not be sugar coated. It might end up at a tribunal where you will need a good lawyer it will be expensive but is worth it.

I hope you are understanding what I have written. good luck and keep us posted on how it goes for your son.
