failing

failing

i have been doing a bachelors degree since 2019 and the last few years well since covid i have been struggling to complete it and it is well i am running out of time and there is a good chance like a 99% chance i wont finish my degree and i feel horrible about this because i have a hex debt now all for literally nothing to show for it and the last 7 years have been a complete waste and i feel like an idiot for even thinking i could do this in the first place i really wanted this so badly and it is just another thing in life that i apperantly cannot have. i havent been able to tell my family who will be crushed and probably annoyed at me and i just i cannot even begin to go into how much of a problem i am causing by not being able to do this most of all though i am just so exhausted and i want to craw into a hole and disappear forever how am i supposed to even handle this all?

Re: failing

Hi @Eden1919 , that sounds very stressful and a lot of pressure you're under.

Can I ask why you think you're failing? Is it just a single subject you're struggling with?

Is it the concepts you're struggling with? Or the pressure of trying to keep up woth workload? Or mental health difficulties impacting your ability to concentrate/motivate/etc?

Would it be helpful for you if I tried to chat through some ideas with you to help you come up with an action plan? - whether it is for being able to try to complete the degree and get help to support you, or for if you cant do it how to process the disappointment you feel and broach the topic with family and ask for their understanding and support.

Re: failing

@Eden1919 PS - i did my degree over 8 years due to health issues also. So many times I felt like giving up or unmotivated, but similar to your thoughts on having the HECS debt I was able to use that to spur me to continue to complete it 😅. I am very lucky that I am naturally academic-minded and practical, so I didnt struggle with that. But I do like to use my skills to help others who may find it harder. 😊

Having said that, I do not work in the field I studied. And I got my current professional job prior to completing my degree too!

I have family members and friends who started degrees but for various reasons did not finish them. I dont think any less of them. 😊 and they have all gone on to have very satisfying and productive careers. 🥰

Re: failing

@Eden1919 have you found out if you can pause your degree and resume when you're able, rather than racing tge clock and hitting the time limit now?

I'm in awe of your perseverance and commitment while you've been struggling with your mh.

I left it too late before asking if I could withdraw in good standing.

Hope you're going OK

Re: failing

Happens to the best of us.

I was in a similar place a couple years ago. I didn't solve the problem by finishing my degree. I wasn't physically healthy enough for the study, and that's sad but okay. I'm still able to do the work I enjoy.

Most uni's will offer a diploma certificate if the degree is incomplete. It's still a tertiary qualification. Depending on your field of study, perhaps you'd be able to work normally in the field without finishing the bachelor? I was able to. If not, you'd still be able to bring that knowledge to other places.

I experienced a deep stress and hopelessness about my situation, too. It passed, and the skills I learned through my study are skills I still possess even if I have a couple incomplete subjects.

Re: failing

Hey @Eden1919, that sounds really tough to deal with and I can understand feeling overwhelmed at telling your family. Study is really hard and I don't think I could manage a university degree with my life and MH. I do think it's amazing that you have stuck at it for so long and through some really challenging time periods.

I don't know whether you have a an equitable learning plan or something similar to support you with your MH while at uni. I did at my TAFE with was through a university in Melbourne and it supported me with options that usually weren't available. Maybe having a conversation with your uni if you haven't already to discuss your options might be benefical.

Thanks for sharing with the community!

Take care
