Friendship Drama

Friendship Drama

Hi everyone,

I need some honest advice on if I'm in the wrong and I guess how I can move forward. I have a friend who has ocd and anxiety and one of her biggest worries is being a bad person and that therefore everyone including her family will leave her. I had a few people make comments to me about her being touchy when we were drinking and it making other people uncomfortable. I felt pressured to tell her by other friends as some of them had brought it up to me multiple times and I'm probably the closest to her. I told her and it made her really spiral and she got quite upset and I'm worried I now made the wrong choice and let myself be talked into doing the wrong thing. I was trying to keep her accountable and not upset other people but it was also just a mistake she made and no bad intent on her side and I don't think she deserves to feel like a bad person. I also have experienced times where I have made a mistake and found out people were talking about it and me behind my back and it really upset me and all I wanted was for someone to say it to my face. So I was also worried about her finding out like that and I thought it might be better if I told her. I have tried to reassure her (I know it's a cycle and not always helpful) that I am not leaving and she's not a bad person but I don't think it's working and I don't know what else to do. I feel like a bad friend.

Re: Friendship Drama

hey @Tarmac_6 it's nice seeing you around 😊

that sounds tough. i can see that you had good intentions when you reached out to this friend, and i'm sorry to hear that she didn't take it too well. i'm like you, i don't like people talking behind my back and i'd rather know than make people uncomfortable than continue that action unknowingly. at the same time, there have been times where i haven't handled the feedback as well as i should've - not because the friend was wrong, but because i was embarrassed or upset at myself. but with time, i did process things and come to the realisation that it's not easy for friends to speak ups - and sharing the hard parts made them a true friend. maybe with time, your friend will realise this too? does she tend to respond like this everything someone points something out/speaks up?

i know you mentioned that the touchy behaviour made others uncomfortable, i did want to clarify, did it make you feel uncomfortable too?

mistakes happen, and sometimes we say the wrong things or act poorly - the important part is that she knows now and it's an opportunity for her to grow. it might've been uncomfortable and painful for her to hear, but i really do hope she takes her time to process and acknowledge whats happened.

Hi @rav3n, no she usually takes accountability and apologises when she’s wrong I think this was just like one of her biggest ocd fears and she’s feeling triggered. I’m hoping after time she’ll feel better. I’m thinking of maybe writing her a little letter she can read over if she’s feeling upset.

I personally wasn’t uncomfortable. It was more like she was like grabbing peoples hands she didn’t know (friends of the group she didn’t know) and putting them on her waist.

Re: Friendship Drama

ahh i see, that makes a lot of sense. it is hard when this is a sensitive topic for her, but from what i'm hearing, you've been a great friend to her. writing that letter sounds like a lovely thing to do, it might just be one of those things that she'll need to process at her own pace. @Tarmac_6

she's lucky to have a friend as caring and supportive as you!! pls don't feel that her feelings/reactions are your responsibility - it's not your fault she reacted this way. you're doing a great job of being there for her, and now it's in her hands to work through it.

i hope you're taking care of yourself too 💙

Well as long as you don’t think I’m in the wrong or there’s anything more I can do I feel ok. Thanks for your support @rav3n

Re: Friendship Drama

Hi @rav3n, I bought her a little gift and wrote her a card and we had a chat and she seems to be doing better. She wasn't mad at me just upset by what I was telling her. We're ok and I'm feeling a lot less stressed, I was really worried I was a horrible person. Thankyou for all your help 🙂

aww yay, so happy that you both talked it out and got some clarity around it. @Tarmac_6 it's very clear that you have a big heart and care heaps, you're no way close to a horrible person!! i get that the anxiety brain does make it hard to remember that though. happy i could help, always here for ya 💙
