Warning: self harm, sexual assault

I turned 40 last year and everything changed for me. I left my husband of 12 years, because a man made me realise that I have been unloved. My ex-husband made me feel like I am always the problem. Even when I had pre-natal and post-natal depression. When my best friend died in 2023, I was crushed. He said he was sad too... When I talked about the sexual assault in my childhood and rape in my 20s, he said yeah get help. He has never helped me find help. I helped him find a psych etc during his difficult times. What made me really needed to leave was when he pushed me down without any love and went in dry.

I left in a terrible way, I could have done it better, I left him a letter because I couldn't face him. He has been very bitter and I completely understand.

I couldn't find a rental and had limited funds, I work part time to care for the kids and was made to go bankrupt from a business we started together. Only me, he said he had a career and I didn't so it made more sense. So I lived with the man that I thought was going to give me the love I deserved.

Maybe I don't deserve any love. All the pressure drove him to increase his prescription marijuana intake. He smoked daily, multiple times a day. Now he has no patience for my self doubt. But the kids love him and I have nowhere to go. No funds to start my own life by my self to sort out the storm inside my head or my heart.

Then my cat was killed, the neighbours dogs went through the cracked gap in the fence and killed him. We had to bury his mauled body.

Work is not supportive, I am never enough, they only point out mistakes. No HR so no EAP.

I have a referral for a psych months ago. They are still full, I can't get any appointments.

I was on anxiety and depression meds from 2014. I have weaned off and been off them for a month. It wasn't giving me reprieve and the physical discomfort was getting worse. I couldn't sleep or stay asleep, I couldn't sit in meetings. The need to stretch and the electricity through my joints and skin was unbearable. I finally feel better from that but now every situation triggers me, my reaction is always to extreme. I'm not worthy, I am a burden, it's all my fault.

I'm taking it a moment at a time, but the struggle is taking its toll. I just want to end it all... But my boys need me. I can not leave them. It's not fair on them. But that shouldn't be the only reason why I stay around.

Family members, including my own parents, haven't spoken to me since I left my ex. Including my best friend since I was 12 years old. We are still friends on social media, but the situation is too hard for her to handle.

I have an appointment with a new GP this afternoon. I'm not giving up. But I feel stuck.. if they admit me, my ex can use it against me to take the kids away. He already thinks I'm a shit human and constantly questions my decisions as a mother.

I am so tired

Hi @AzzyWazzy

I'm so sorry to hear of all of the hardships and loss that you've faced in such a short period of time. I'm so glad that you've felt able to share here and hope that getting some of this out helps in some small way.

What really stands out to me throughout your post is your strength and your resilience. Even though these events have understandably left a large impact on you, you've still been able to keep going, even if it's just one moment at a time.

It's great that you're seeing your GP today. While you're there, might I suggest you mention the waitlist for the psychologist you were referred to (if you were referred to them by this GP). I also just wanted to add, that if it's not a specialised psychologist who you feel meets your specific needs, you are able to see whichever psychologist that you choose even with a referral. Mental health care plans can be exchanged between psychologists, even if you've had a few sessions with one, you can switch and do the rest with another. So if there are suitable psychologists out there with less of a wait time I might suggest exploring that as an option.

Another option for support in the meantime that could suit is SANE's Guided Recovery. It's a free service that you can learn more about here.

And of course, the forums are here to support you too 💜

Re: Stuck

@AzzyWazzy which state are you in?

My GP referred me to a psychiatrist in Sydney, 4hrs away from where I live. He did this in April and there were no appointments until August. I was in a similar position to you. Helpless. Thinking of ending it all.

I called the NSW mental health hotline and within 10 days days I had an appointment with a psychiatrist.

Unfortunately I've had a shocker with the first GP (useless). I have now changed GP's and he totally gets it.

Call the hotline if you're in NSW and tell them about your thoughts to end it. They will triage you.

I hope you find the help you need.

Thank you. This gives me hope and strength. I'm in WA. I'm seeing a new GP this afternoon, hopefully I can get better help.

Re: Stuck

I'm in the same situation. It's tough, taking it day by day helps a bit.

Moment by moment even. Day by day seems too long... We can do this...

Re: Stuck

I think from reading your situation you have been a victim of "parental alienation" that your husband has painted the picture so that you're always the bad guy, and he's always the good guy.

Hes got ALL the problems, and you ARE the problem, in his mind.

My mum was insecure when I was a young child she 100% manipulated my emotions to reflect "Mum is better than Dad" and it caused very large problems between me and my father as I would echo Mums opinions that everything dad does, is inferior. She did not want to listen to me telling her how much I loved my dad, she wanted me to praise her instead. Her own ignorance that the children love and praise BOTH parents as part of their natural development.

Ultimately I came to see my mother as a revolting manipulator who turned me against myself and sabotaged my life. Most people don't come to this point, they believe ardently in the lies that their family tells "I love you Mum, but only if you let me live in your house for free".

My brothers play on my mothers self loathing to get money out of her, I don't talk to her as she is a beyond ridiculous joke who pays to be abused and degraded - rather than fixing herself she play these games and there's grandkids involved now.

So I turn my back to witness a third generation of child abuse from a very sick old woman. You have to choose in life to, stay with the tormented head games and be a part of that or walk the very lonely path of honesty and righteousness. I am so lonely in life, I miss my family terribly but to witness them biting, scratching and abusing each other as daily habits is disgusting to me: I wouldn't stick around to watch someone getting bashed on the street, I don't watch my mother and 2 brothers abuse and degrade each other in a very, very sick game of "repeating family violence because we enjoy it and we do not to evolve and learn better ways of existing because that would stop our little private culture inside our houses that we hide from other people in the community"

Hmmmmm. No thanks, nope no way.

Re: Stuck

Wow thank you so much for sharing. You are absolutely right... We choose our own path, and I choose unconditional love and support for my children.

Yes, he is always the "good guy" and has done nothing wrong at all. I can't and I won't think about it any more second. I choose to think about those who love me back and give me support X
