I need advice on my brother

I need advice on my brother

Hi I have been struggling with what to do over the past week I am a current victim of DV. My brother (15) struggles a lot with anger and mental health issues and he tends to lash out a lot. I have been looking for ways to help support him and ways to help him get through a rough time but it gets extremely hard for me and my mother as well. She is a single mother. Last night her hurt himself and I'm worried not just for his safety but for mine as well. I mentioned to my mum to get him into a psych ward but she insisted that he wont go and it wont help because he wont talk about his issues. But I genuinely believe it is better for him there as he will get the care he needs and he wont be a danger to himself or us does anyone have any advice?

Hi @SunriseSister1

This sounds like it's a distressing and sometimes scary situation to be in.

You've mentioned DV, is this referring to your brother's behaviour towards you? Whether it is your brother or another party, I'd recommend giving 1800RESPECT a call. SafeSteps is another support service designed to help in domestic or family violence situations.

In terms of your brother going to a psych ward, it can be a bit complicated when the person is not willing to go. Generally, people cannot be taken against their wishes unless they are assessed to pose serious physical harm to themselves or others. This can get more complicated when the person in question is a minor. Maybe it might be helpful to call your local mental health triage line and discuss what services might be available to him, and then perhaps you could share this with your mum?

If you are worried that you or your brother are in immediate serious danger, it's important to contact 000.

I hope this gives you some information to move forward with, please know that the community is here to support you too
