Offering support

Hi

I just joined today. I'm not a veteran but just a woman who is very sensitive and empathetic to the plight of veterans, knowing it can be a very lonely existence with the weight of emotion that comes with serving.

Here if you need to talk 😊

Re: Offering support

Hi @Banjomum1-

My Dad is a veteran and I he was in the Defense Force for my entire childhood.

I think it's phenomenal that you want to support veterans, and I think you've hit a really important part; being neutral. From speaking with a lot of veterans, they often have mixed experiences with their service. Often civilians make assumptions about what being in the military is like or why someone might join. Being open to learning and listening, and reflecting on our own biases can go such a long way in helping veterans feel seen, heard and validated. A balance of asking SOME questions, but not probing TOO much.

AND just the fact that you're posting and reaching out on here absolutely shows the respect you have for veterans, which I'm sure goes a long way.

Hey @Banjomum1-, thank you for reaching out to Veterans!

It's so heartwarming the see support for Veterans from Members like yourself who are connected here on the Forums and want to provide peer support. It can be a lovely and rewarding experience supporting others, and we thank you for supporting the community.

Re: Offering support

Thank you for your encouraging words.

It's an area I'm really passionate about. I've got ptsd for a totally different reason so I know what it feels like to go through the horrors of that and not knowing who to talk to and confide in

Re: Offering support

Hi Peeps,

How are we all today. I have exercised my democratic right early today. I am grateful to live in a country that is free. Thanks to the sacrifices made for us by those who went before us. For me I joined the Army because I was patriotic and also it was a way for me to leave a bad situation at home. I was only 17 when I joined up.

Re: Offering support

Hey @Oaktree 😊

I'm doing okay today. How are you?

I definitely need to do the same as you, and probably want to do it BEFORE the weekend. I don't love crowds.

I really do love how you connect your ADF service to democracy. It's probably not something I link together enough.

Hi @0ddsidian

I am good today thanks.

I have a meeting with my case manager this afternoon. I had to cancel her last week. Nothing really to report
