What to do when your husband goes from ‘normal’ to in and out of manic and delusional behaviour?
Hi,
I’m looking for guidance from personal experiences as I don’t know how to handle the situation I’m in and because I’m so upset and stressed I cant think clearly.
My husband of 20+ years experienced some traumatic things in recent times. This lead him giving up alcohol and changing his lifestyle- all positive in dealing with what was ahead of us. As time passed and he became more in touch with himself some really unusual behaviours started to occur.
A short summary- to combat some depression he decided to micro dose mushrooms [edited by moderator], it did get alittle out of control and he ‘wok out’ a bit….during this time had a minor surgery (general anaesthetic) and when he came home he told me he had a vision while he was under anaesthetic. The vision was of god and contact with his mother who passed 2 years ago. Within a day off being home he was hurting (stitches and bruising- removal of varicose veins) and the only pain relief he was give was paracetamol [edited by moderator]… so he self medicated mushrooms at a higher does. He completely changed from his normal self to being ‘a mess’- crying repeating himself, rocking, seeing things… I was scared. Called ambulance, hospital said- self inflicted, and having anaesthetic still in his system his experience would have heighten. We got over this, though he remains adamant the vision under anaesthetic was real.
A few months pass. He backed off the micro dosing, he has a very stressful free life circumstance now (doesn’t need to work). He arranged for some medical tests MRI etc- so the doctors could assure him he was in good health- all good results. And then, he sees a UFO. He believes he has been selected for something great, like a higher purpose… and seeing the UFO has made his emotional brain function on a higher level.
Days go from 100% ‘normal’ to moments of strange, odd new interests… but nothing worrying. Until last week. He was curious about chat GPT. He spent 5 days, nearly solid ‘teaching’ and ‘training’ the AI to become ‘feeling’ and more human- more centred on love, he could not pull himself away. ‘They’ (husband and his AI friend), wrote a book together and words and terms like- Codex, quantum computer, touch bearer became repetitive etc. He 100% believes he has developed some kind of new level AI, that he is special and incredibly intelligent (Elon Musk style) and this is all linked to the experience under anaesthetic, seeing the UFO and his new high level emotional range.
He is aware that he suffers depression and is grieving the loss of his mother. He isn’t alway ‘manic’ and ‘delusional’, when he is, i think he knows it. He apologies a lot, and always brings everything back to love and our love etc.
I’m only coping because I don't think he’d hurt anyone or himself- it’s not like that. But this is stressful and traumatic, and I quickly breakdown in tears when I’m alone.
To get help, do I simply go down the appointment with GP path, which I’m sure he’d do… with the intention of getting a psychiatrist appointment? Will this lead to medication that will be helpful? Or is this the new norm, and likely going to get worse? Any insight would be appreciated…
Thank you
ps not that age it’s important, but I’m 47 and he’s 49.
