Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts

Depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts

In the last few days I've had a few down moments and I relapsed and end up needing stichers in my arm I was scared to talk to my pop and family about it as when I was living with my mum and step dad I was alone with my mental health. I'm not alone now but it's still hard to get out of the mindset of I need to get through it by myself. What I'm trying to say is if anyone out here knows ways to make it easier to open up and reach out for help I would love to hear them.

Hello @Guitarsrock0618 and welcome to the forums. I'm sorry to hear you've had a rough time lately but please know it's ok and completely normal to relapse sometimes. I'm glad you are not alone now but I understand these things can be hard to talk about. Being vulnerable and talking about our feelings and emotions is difficult and even more so when we are feeling down. Not sure there's really any way to make it easier but just sitting down somewhere comfortable maybe with a cuppa and trying to be as open as you can, remembering that people want to help you get through this.

Know that you are not alone and we are here to support you however we can. Take care of yourself and I'm here if you ever want to chat 😊

Re: Depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts

Hey @Guitarsrock0618 and welcome to the forums.

It can be so hard can't it, to get past that voice inside telling us we need to do it all on our own and not to 'burden' others with our problems! I think probably most of us here have been in that position where we need to reach out for help but get held back by that mindset.

Something that helps me is to try to consider it from the opposite perspective: If my friend or family member was going through this would I prefer for them to just try to work it out on their own, or would I want them to let me be there to support them through it?

I think it's also important to know that it's never an easy or comfortable conversation to have, but maybe there are some ways to make it a little easier: Sometimes letting the person know what you're needing before you start can be helpful for both of you, eg "I just need to share some things and have someone hear me, I'm not looking for advice right now" or "I'm feeling pretty lost and need some guidance and would value your thoughts"... Sometimes it might be easier to get the conversation started with a note if it feels more accessible to write what you're feeling. The note doesn't need to be the whole conversation, but it can be a helpful way to get it started...

Also I just wanted to highlight that you've reached out here, and while it may not be quite the same, it's still a scary thing that you were able to do, good on you
