Loss of a beloved pet

Loss of a beloved pet

I suddenly lost my beloved cat, Loki, on Monday.

Iam devastated, and my heart aches.

I feel guilty, responsible, regretful and deeply disappointed in myself for not doing more for this little soul who brought so much joy and warmth into our home.

Grief feels especially cruel when it comes on the heels of years of pain, when you feel you have no strength left, and life delivers another unbearable blow.

I know Loki was cherished, loved and cared for as a precious member of our family. I know that a silent kidney condition led to a sudden heart attack, and yet, even understanding this, I cannot shake the pain of wishing I had done more to save him.

I believe in the healing power of animals and the profound love they gift us. We are entrusted with their care, and in return, they give us companionship beyond words. But Loki's life was far too short, 3 years old, and that is a sorrow Iam struggling to carry.

His sister, Miku, feels his absence, as does Shoga, and I am doing my best to focus on her and my family as we grieve this loss together.

Love your animals deeply. Their time with us is never long enough, but the love they give is immeasurable.

Sadly, Alisse

I am so sorry to hear of your loss @Alisse

It sounds like you absolutely loved Loki and gave him a lovely caring home. I understand that feeling of wishing there was something more you could have done, or all the 'what if's that come up after we lose one we love. It honestly sounds like there was nothing you could have known to do differently.

Sending you love during this sad time and I'll hug my own kitties extra tight today thinking of Loki and of you.

Re: Loss of a beloved pet

Hi Alisse,
One of my dogs died in March last year and the sadness really overtook me.
The dear girl was the last of my little family who lived with me before my long term partner went into care, had her for 6 of her 10 years.
My 18.5 old year sweet boy I bought as a tiny pup died after we moved here.
There was also a devoted and loving girl I had for 4 years who died and it shattered both myself and my partner, I don't even want to think about that right now.
Aside from my sweet boy who needed to go then I blame myself for the death of the others although it was not my fault so I can truly empathise with you.
I have two tiny 2 year old girls who are my only companions here now and just need to focus on the love they give me and their care.
Sending love on your loss.

@Alisse

I'm so sorry to hear about Loki. Clearly he was loved and meant a lot to you. I've experience a similar thing with one of our cats just passing suddenly from a heart issue. It can be so incredibly painful, and so full of a lot of heavy emotions. They way you have described how fiercely you loved him, i see your feelings of guilt and wishing you could have done more, as not any kind of failure but just speaks to the depth of how much your care, and just how mush he was treasured. On top of that the cruelty that this grief must feel like with your time with him cut so short.

Miku and Shoga are fortunate so have such a loving and caring mum. I hope they can, in time, help you to ease some of the sorrow you must be feeling. Be kind to yourself and remember that, although short, you gave Loki a life full love and devotion. And that is a beautiful thing you gave him.

Re: Loss of a beloved pet

Hi @Alisse,

Thank you for sharing with us and I am very sorry for the loss of your beloved Loki.

I understand the pain you are feeling right now. Life can be so cruel and unfair at times, but to blame oneself and wish for more time just shows how much love we still have inside of us for our animals that we've unfortunately lost… and that's as beautiful as it is painful.

I think Loki would be very moved by your lovely words, and it sounds like he was very loved by you and his siblings.

Each time I feel overwhelmed with sadness about my animals who have passed, I think about just how lucky I was to have known them at all, even if only for a short time.

Thinking of you, Miku and Shoga 🧡🐾

Hi @MJG017

Thank you so much for your kind thoughtful words. They truly touched my heart.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your cat, that sounds like such a painful and sudden kind of loss, as was Loki, and I really appreciate you sharing that with me. Your compassion and understanding mean so much right now.

Miku and Shoga are definitely helping to comfort me in their own gentle ways. I'm holding close the reminder that Loki was deeply loved, and that his short life was full of care and connection.

Hi @Ru-bee

Thank you so much for your kind words and for holding Loki in your thoughts. Your understanding and support truly mean a lot.

The "What ifs" are hard, but I'm trying to remind myself that he was deeply loved and had a happy, caring home. It brings me comfort to know he was cherished every day, even if I would trade it all to have him back.

It's so sweet of you to hug your kitties a little tighter in his honour, I love that. I hope you have many joyful years ahead with them.

Kindly Alisse
