Something’s not right

um what ADHD

um what ADHD

so i was talking to my psychologist and she brought up the possibility that i might have ADHD and i am like no surely not my sister and mum have that and i was different to my sister growing up and she was like you probably just masked a lot more than your sister did and idk then i talked to my family about it including my mum and sister with ADHD and they were like yeah we have wondered for a while if you had ADHD based on what you have said to us on a number of occasions and i am like why is this the first i am hearing about this like what the heck and if they thought that why did they never get me assessed for it anyway so now i am spiralling like do i have ADHD as well as my other stuff i know my psychologist was like you definitely have autism and schizoaffective disorder but it is possible you have ADHD as well and i just like what i dont even know what to think and like i looked up some of the symptoms and i can relate to them but then idk if it is that or the negative symptoms from the schizoaffective or if it is both at the same time or what idk it is hard to know what is going on and i am so confused.

has anyone else been told they might have ADHD as an adult?

👋🏼 Hi @Eden1919 Yep. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my late 30s. My daughters were diagnosed in their late 20s.

My son was diagnosed in his late 30s.

We all have anxiety and dyslexia as a bonus.

You can’t beat genetics 🧬

@Jynx is incredibly good to talk to about this.

You’re going to be ok. Spectrum peoples we are awesome ☺️

Hey @unreal just a lil tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them - use the @ symbol and a drop down will appear, and you can choose their name. If their name isn't there, you can type it out and it should then appear for you to select, then it will show up in blue, like this: @Eden1919

@Glisten Thanks for the tag hun!!

@Eden1919 late ADHD bloomer checking in!! I was diagnosed at 27, and it certainly came as a shock. It was a pretty hefty process of going back over my life and realising all these ways that ADHD had been impacting and shaping my life without me even knowing.

So first off - it's okay to be really overwhelmed by this!! Especially when you've also got all these other diagnoses that you're managing.

It is entirely possible you were better at masking - it's also possible that you just have a different neurotype to your mum n sister. A 'neurotype' just describes the particular way a persons brain works - and thing is, no two people's ADHD is gonna look the same. Some folks have a lot more struggles with memory than others, some might have more hyperactivity and some might have more inattentiveness. None of it means that anyone is more or less valid in their experiences than anyone else.

Whatever does happen, take it step by step. The good news is that the meds for ADHD do work wonders, and often with self-understanding also comes the ability to better care for ourselves too, cos we get better at identifying our needs.

We will be here for you along the way! Come hang out on the ADHD thread if you like, feel free to ask any questions or seek out some shared experiences - it all helps!
