Interesting read : Capabilities are a human right

Interesting read : Capabilities are a human right

@chibam @Appleblossom and other friends

I found this very interesting. https://aeon.co/essays/why-reading-martha-c-nussbaums-philosophy-is-pure-pleasure

Fascinating how it potentially gets to the nub of how and why MH deficits and c-ptsd are so devastating but at the same time suggests a new way forward

Love that you posted this @Dimity

I had heard of Nussbaum about 5 years ago, with interest, but didn’t pursue it, or buy her books, though I thought about it.

I like her 10 rights based capabilities. I like she discussed genuine realisable opportunities and distinguishes fasting from starving and thresholds of achieving capabilities. My family endured “lack of access to adequate food” on both sides, back at least 2 generations, probably more. I am having great discussions about adequacy and types and preparation of food with my son atm. He has been heavily into intermittent fasting.

I doubt she said the task of government is to make capabilities EQUALLY available. Human equality has been an interesting and debated topic, but I am beginning to think we should not frame it in terms of equality…. Opportunity to flourish…. Is a great nuanced phrase.

The writer should not have exaggerated using stats, then apologise. I thought that time wasting and idiotic, however I did appreciate his distinctions between N and Sen and his discussion of levels of generality.

I will look at the other 2 topics later.

Can you tell I started Philosophy at uni, have always been interested, but was put off by uninspiring teacher and unnecessary nitpicking. Lol

cheers Bella
