Trust Issues

Trust Issues

I have faced trust issues well throughout my life. I am completely unsure why but it has gotten worse since I have gotten cheated on in my previous relationship. I really love my current boyfriend but I find it extremely difficult to trust him. I want to be with him forever, and I want to create an unbreakable bond. We tell each other a lot about our lives but I can see my lack of trust in him affecting him. Please help me understand why I feel this lack of trust even prior to being cheated on and how my boyfriend and I can get through this.

Re: Trust Issues

@Nikuukin hello and welcome to the forums. Thankyou for sharing. It's very hard to trust once you have been hurt before. But I try to think that not everyone is the same and just because someone has broken your trust before doesn't been that your current partner will do the same. Being open with each other and you letting him know how you feel and what has happened previously is key in this situation. Hopefully he understands where you are coming from and that can help to reassure you that he isn't going to break that trust.

Take care of yourself, it's always hard when trust has been broken before and can take years to build that trust back up.

Hi @Nikuukin

Welcome to the forums

I'm sorry to hear that you experienced that in your past relationship, and it's completely understandable that this would be playing a part in your difficulty trusting in your current relationship. It is interesting that you noticed that you had struggled with trust prior to your past boyfriend. It can be really hard to get to the root of things like this, and often it's something that therapy can be very helpful for as you and your therapist can really delve into what may have happened to cause you to feel as though you can't trust those around you. Is that something that you might consider?

Otherwise, it might help to reflect on the relationships you had and saw around you when you were younger - often what is modelled to us as we're growing up can form deep-seated beliefs about the world. For example if you saw lots of turbulent relationships where trust was an issue it would be understandable that you take that in and have it affect your ideas around relationships.

If this resonates with you and you wanted to go a little deeper, you might be interested to look into attachment styles and how they can be influenced due to our early experiences

Whether or not that feel relevant to you, it's clear that you really care for your partner and it's great that you're willing to recognise that this is an issue and something that you're wanting to work on, and reaching out is a great first step

Re: Trust Issues

As much as I would love to delve into my past and identify the root cause of my feelings, I am currently in a place where I am unable to fund a therapist for myself. I have done the attachment style and I have recognized myself to have anxious/ preoccupied attachment style. I did grow up with my family being quite argumentative and loud and not much without my dad when I was younger. Thank you for your reply, it's much appreciated.

Re: Trust Issues

I was also wondering if I do regonise a part of my childhood that had caused this should I let my partner know what I think it may be. I did get rejected by a boy when I was younger and I have witnessed a few people I'm close to be cheated on. So I was thinking these may be some of the root causes.

Maybe it would be helpful to share these things with your partner @Nikuukin so that it can give him more of an understanding, as well as demonstrating that you're taking the time to try to understand and work on this. I also think talking about things helps us to process them and understand our feelings around them better, so it could be helpful in that way too
