Return to work hasnt gone to plan

Return to work hasnt gone to plan

So, returning to work hasnt gone to plan. I found out a couple of days ago my team is being made redundant. We find out for sure in about a fortnight, then there is handover to offshore (our work is being put to an offshore team) for a couple of weeks and redeployment.

If I cant find a job during redeployment then Ill be retrenched. Part of being retrenched is that they will pay for some vocational study, given Ive got 13 years of continual service with the company my severance will be pretty decent. Im thinking of going and doing my cert III in community studies and then a cert IV in mental health. Eventually I want to go and study at uni, a bachelor of psychological science and sociology.

Im not sure if its the best path given that I have Schizoaffective Disorder. Im stable but Im unsure how dealing with those who arent will affect me and my stability. Is there a way that I could like find out if I could handle things? Can you do work experience in this kind of space?

Hey @ClockFace thank you for sharing your experiences with the community!

Sorry to hear about your team going offshore and potentially being retrenched but great if they pay for some education. Getting qualifications is a great way of changing our work and learning new skills.

I am diagnosed with schizophrenia and have been studying for 8 years at TAFE and will have 6 qualifications when I graduate in June hopefully. I have a disability plan that allows me to get extensions and study part-time while I work as well. There are also placements where we can experience the field that we are studying and often employment can be offered after the completion of placement.

I encourage you to contact your local TAFE or Uni to discuss your options.

Best of luck!

Thank you

Oh @ClockFace , I'm so sorry to hear this has happened. I know how much effort you put in to getting back to work.

Please don't think having a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder means you can't study/work. As @RiverSeal said, adjustments can be made to support you in your learning.

At the same time, let's wait to hear if this is confirmed.... right?

@ClockFace there may be local organisations you could volunteer at that help with mental health and/or community services. During the time given for redeployment or job seeking, you could invest some time in a volunteer role and see if you are able to assist without getting too triggered.

Idk if that is an option for you.

Sorry for the late reply, I didnt get notification that there was a response to my message.

The redundancy has been confirmed. They are training the new team now and once complete we will get a weeks notice and then go to redeployment.

I have been training for the role and have just started doing it. It feels so pointless, Im finding it really frustrating. I am struggling to remember my way around systems, there is a lot of them, and the process I am doing is really long and Im getting really tired concentrating that long.

We arent increasing hours this fortnight, so I am staying at 5 hours a day 5 days a week.

There appears to be roles being made available in a few teams. One team deals with DV, Financial Councillors and hard case financial hardship and Im kinda interested in that, I could do some work where I would be making a difference.

Im still going to study either way, Bookkeeping and also going to do a Bachelor in Nutrition as well

Hey @ClockFace, thanks for the update! Sounds like it is turning out to be challenging for you in the new role. Sorry to hear that it's not the best fit for you!

I love your study plans and it's great that you have a plan b to work with!

Take care

Hey @ClockFace ,

I'm sorry to hear about the confirmation of this redundancy. I know how much work you put into getting back to work. As part of this plan, do you get support to find a new job?

Re: Return to work hasnt gone to plan

@tyme

Yeah we get one month support. If we dont find a job then we are retrenched. Then we get external support or retraining. Im planning on the retraining and going and studying to be a bookkeeper/accountant.
