Husband with depression

Husband with depression

My husband and I are rock bottom in our relationship. We’ve been together for 18 years, have 2 kids under 10. Husband is suffering from depression and won’t talk, any form of meaningful communication is non existent, intimacy is now also non existent. Approx 2 years ago our problems started with him saying he was not emotionally attached to me, since then he has left and come back 3 times, our relationship has always been to blame and it’s taken a long time to identify that he is suffering from depression. How do I continue to be supportive when he shuts me out? I don’t know what would help him / how to help him. Looking for advice from people in similar situations.
thanks x

Re: Husband with depression

hey there @Floss_912 welcome to the forums!

i can see that you've gone through so much in your relationship, and i understand that looking after loved ones with depression can be overwhelming at times, especially when we don't know how to support them.

i haven't been in a similar situation to you, but i have experienced depression before and i can relate to shutting down/not communicating with people who tried to be there for me. for me, just knowing that my friends cared, hearing them validate my feelings and being there helped heaps. also talking to a professional and getting support from clinician and psychs helped me start open up.

is your husband willing to talk to someone about his depression? i can see you care about him heaps, and maybe for now, just being there for him, making him feel heard, and encouraging him to reach out is all you can do. and that's a great deal already! but also don't forget to look after yourself! looking after others can take a toll on us so making sure you're regularly getting your self-care in and re-energising is just as important.

i'm sure others with similar experiences will share soon as well. we're here for you 💙

Hey not much to say, But I have been in your husband's position where my depression affected out relationship and my kids and consequently I ended up going through his struggles.

All I can say is please get help and support as much as you can to look after yourself. Hopefully he will get the help and support he needs.
