Any luck with jobs lately?

Any luck with jobs lately?

Question: I am wanting to know if anyone who is neurodivergent with a lot of comorbidities is having any success with job searching/obtaining a job here in Aus? _______________________________________________________________________________

Preface: I understand the economy is "flooded" with jobs but in reality they arent. The ghost job posts are at an all time high and its gross. I know I should "just get a job" but I dont work like that. It may work for some people but I cant "just get a job." The job I hold needs to have meaning and give me some sort of reason to get outta bed in the morning.

_________________________________________________________________________________

I obtained my dual diagnosis(AuDHD) not to long ago and I am having such a hard time finding the job that I want. All the positions that I held have caused so much deep rooted wounds that its hard for me to want to work again, if I am being honest.

I have job searched for MONTHS and put out applications and I am coming up to dead ends 100% of the time. I have used chatgpt to help me write my cover letters and better my resume because I dont know what else to do to try and get a job that I would enjoy. I am not getting as many interviews as I hoped and the interviews that I am getting are for really sketchy companies that are unethical or they just arent hiring at this time but are doing interviews.

I have tried to go to centrelink to obtain help but they wont for reasons that I wont put on a public forum. Jobs Victoria wont assist either. I am on every job board I can find online.

Does anyone in Aus have any suggestions for jobs for a person that enjoys working in the Criminal Justice system specifically within the rehabilitation/disability/probation/parole space because I am literally LOST and could use some suggestions. I am exhausted to say the least.

Hey @-DarkHades !

I actually know a lot of people with AuDHD who have jobs and are so great at their jobs because of their AuDHD!

This is not to make you feel bad but to show that anything is possible, especially if you have an interest in the Criminal Justice system.

One job that I'm super interested in as a neurodivergent person is working with the Youth Justice system. I don't know if you are interested in this, but residential services for youth, education for those in the Youth Justice system etc.

So there are school systems linked in with youth justice. There are two wardens for every 8 students in a class, and one teacher. These systems also have social workers, mental health workers, etc.

In Vic, we also have another program for youth who complete 6 weeks in a mechanics program. This is targeted for at-risk youth, and is supported by welfare workers etc.

Are you interested in working with youth? Or are you looking at only adults?

Re: Any luck with jobs lately?

Nope. No luck at all. 😔

I'm not diagnosed "neurodivergent" - although I guess there must be something unusual in my noggin, since I struggle with geography in ways that most people I know don't seem to. e.g. They all seem to just know where their jobs are, and I don't.

And yes, you are right, the country is not "flooded" with jobs, or else all us unemployed people would be getting these jobs!

Unfortunately, I don't have any viable contacts for you. I think I do have a cousin who works in a prison (last I heard), but we're not really on speaking terms and I've never been able to get these people to do a favor for me, let alone some stranger I know from the internet.

There's supposed to be a mass walk-out of NSW government psychiatrists soon. I don't know if that includes prison/criminal psychiatrists, but I'm sure that this will have an impact on the prison psychiatry system, if only indirectly (e.g. maybe the govt. might transfer some of it's prison psychiatrists over to the everyday system, to help ease the pressure?) So maybe this walk-out might create job vacancies in the NSW prison system for you?

Also, I think I've heard that the new NT government is coming down hard on crime? Maybe this will mean a lot more prison system jobs?

Hi @-DarkHades I hear how hard it is right now trying to find a job.

if you are getting jobseeker payments through Centrelink*, and your diagnostician can provide a letter stating your AuDHD diagnosis, CoAct may be able to help. They’re an employment agency for people with disabilities, including neurodivergence, and are a national organisation. There are a few more of these agencies (DES) popping up all over Australia.

Hope this helps ☺️

*apologies if this is what you meant by help from Centrelink. I wasn’t sure if it was their job finder service you were referring to.

Re: Any luck with jobs lately?

You know @tyme I should have specified in my OG post 🤣 what cohort I'm interested in working with. That would have saved a lot of questions, huh?

I am interested in working with youth that part doesn't bother me. What I do know is that I don't want to work at a resi house. I worked with youth who lived at Resi houses already. I also don't want to be a CO. I worked with CO's before in America and that just doesn't sit right in my gut for some reason *rolls eyes*

Hey @chibam. Geography is a lie 🤣. That subject is so hard for me as well. How do people know where places are without 1) have been to them, 2) know what region of the world it's in, and 3) how does everyone know streets and businesses but I just don't... It doesn't make sense.

That's no problem if you don't have contacts Chi just more of wanting some acknowledgement that I'm not the only one struggling with trying to find a place that doesn't harm us in anyway.

I hate to hear that psychiatrists are walking out. We need them more than ever but they should get paid what they deserve so it's a hard one :/.

I don't qualify for Centrelink/jobs vic job search because "I'm too capable of finding a job myself and that I should just look on seek and indeed for jobs or volunteer."

I am in the works of possibly qualifying for DES but I was told the same thing by the NDIA that I am "too" capable *facepalm*....

I'm also in Vic not NSW.

Youth Justice is big in Vic @-DarkHades .

Sad to say, youth detention too. Certainly work out there. Have you tried looking at the Vic careers webpage?

I can find places easily enough when people actually give you the address. I can read a map.

But when people give me crap about "not going where I'm supposed to go", without telling me where exactly these places are, I just cannot understand them. Nobody else I know seems to endure this abuse, and I just don't understand that. How come they all know "where their supposed to go" and I just don't?

It's almost like they've all got some GPS circuitry in their brains that's missing in me.

We need help, but IMHO, we don't need the sort of people who are currantly dominating (and destroying) our psychiatry industry.

They create these massive staffing shortages by demanding outrageous pay rates, and then complain to the government about how overworked they are! They apparently make about $360,000 per year! For that same price, we could hire 6 times as many psychiatrists at $60,000 a year, and the workload burden of existing psychiatrists would be split among these 6 new psychiatrists! Wait times would plummet like a rock, so that you could expect practically immediate service, and each psychiatrist would have the time necessary to properly treat their patients.

I just can't believe that psychiatrists deserve $360,000 a year - much less the $450,000 a year they are demanding. Out in the general community, most people tend to get sort of help that psychiatrists ought to be giving (but don't!) for free, if they have good friends or relatives.

Take people like you and me, who need to be set up with worthwhile jobs. Some people can get this sort of service for free, from their friends and relatives! Most of the guys I went to school with, who didn't go to college, got set up with jobs by their dads. And in the Royal Inquiry into Robodebt, one of the suicidal Robodebt victims' mother gave testimony that her dead son had once been set up with a job by his cousin! There was no insinuation that any money had changed hands between the cousins for this service! The cousin presumably performed this service out of the goodness of his heart!

And yet in the a mental health industry, psychiatrists get paid $360,000 to give this sort of normally-free help to their patients??!??!?? And then they don't even do it?

What a rort!

If people like that Robodebt guy's cousin can set him up with a job for free, then I think it's more then fair for our psychiatrists to get paid $60,000 a year to perform these sorts of duties for their patients.

Re: Any luck with jobs lately?

hey @tyme,

I havent for a long time. Ive gotten really burnt out with looking for jobs as of late which is so sad cause I need one.

Little rant: I hate..actually loootthhee job sites. How and WHY are they asking for like a million years of experience in a certain industry but then cry when people leave cause the workload is SO HIGH then they wont hire someone who is wanting to learn the industry but doesnt have enough experience and they wont hire them cause they "dont have the time" bro... *sigh* literally wanting to shove my head in a wall...A literal christmas wish list they put on the job listings...

ANYWAY.. no I havent. I want to but I get discouraged but I need to...

Hey @-DarkHades , do you mean it's frustrating looking for jobs or applying for jobs? I don't mind looking and can share how I do it, but in terms of applying, I'm not very keen lol.

I hate writing selection criteria responses.
