Anxiety causing medical problems

Anxiety causing medical problems

Hi members

I need some guidance. For starters the way I'm going I don't think I'm going to make it into the new year. For 4 years my doctors have been trying to work out why I'm not sleeping well. So I haven't had a goodnight sleep in years.

However, over the past 5 months I've had nausea and a constant unwell feeling in my stomach. Doctors have been doing tests (ultrasound, ct) and it's all coming up clean.

I'm now at a point where I've taken 2 weeks off work and everything is just horrible. The cause? Possibly subconscious anxiety related to me spending all my money on a house which I get the keys today. I'm terrified on so many levels. Mother is hoping this will start to normalise once things get moving but I'm not so hopeful.

If this constant stomach doesn't subside I just don't think I can continue. Has anybody been in this situation?

Hi @Barnzey and welcome to the forums

It sounds as though this constant nausea has really been impacting your life these past 5 months. I'm hearing that you think that it might be linked to purchasing your house, do you feel like it started around the same time that you started the process, or that it's gotten worse the closer the move in date has gotten? It would be understandable that this would be causing anxiety, buying a house is a big, scary step to take, and it's true that anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms sometimes. Have you spoken to your dr about this being a possibility?

Aside from your dr and your mum, do you currently have any other supports in place at the moment? It sounds as though everything from lack of sleep, to the constant nausea, and the stress of buying a home is really starting to take it's toll and I think anyone would be needing some extra support in a time like this.

Re: Anxiety causing medical problems

I understand how stressful buying a house can be, I've done it twice! And the last time I did it I felt physically sick. What you are feeling is a pretty normal response and your Mother might be right (aren't they always? :P)

Maybe you can try to identify what it is that's terrifying you, is it the debt, the repairs, the new neighbourhood - all of the above? Try to think if there anything you can do to alleviate these things.

Not sleeping well sounds terrible, indeed. I seem to have the opposite problem, I think there was a mix up when I was reincarnated I was supposed to come back as a cat. But alas, I'm stuck with this terribly unfunctional human body. I'm sure you have already explored medication, if you haven't looked into it I know a lot of people do have success with medical cannabis these days which comes in many shapes and sizes such as flower, oil, and gummies.

Another suggestion is to do a sleep test, you could have sleep apnea for example. I did one and from memory it was free, or had minimal costs involved. Something to consider.

Sorry to hear you are struggling right now, hopefully you feel better soon.

Hi @Barnzey,

Welcome to the Forum, and thank you for sharing.

I'm very sorry that you've had so many health concerns to deal with — I think that your mother and @Ru-bee are definitely right in that anxiety can cause and/or exacerbate any underlying health conditions. And Anxiety is certainly a big culprit when it comes to stomach issues.

When my anxiety is really bad it can manifest into terrible chest and stomach pains as well as not being able to concentrate properly. Something that has really helped me is practising good self-care, medication (both chemical and herbal thanks to my GP and Naturopath), and being open about my mental health.

I also think that speaking to your GP about the potential for anxiety being the root cause is a good place to start now that you've been able to eliminate other causes.

And congratulations on your new home, but I'm sorry that the stress of this is most likely causing these other problems for you… I think you've made a really big step in reaching out here on the Forum. Sometimes just venting about our concerns can help lighten the load, so to speak.

I hope that you find the support that you need and that we hear from you again soon, take care.

Re: Anxiety causing medical problems

I actually bought the house in august 2023, so these symptoms started well after the initial purchase. I even saved more deposit during that time then expected. I mentioned to the doctor the other day and he suggested a new drug but due to how everything else is atm we advised against it.

I don't have any support. 8 years ago i got diagnosed with GAD. But after a few months I got it under control. I've even been in relationships, moved twice without any issues.

I hope it all works out for you. Sometimes, our medical needs change when we or our environment changes @Barnzey

Good on you for being able to achieve so much and being so well.

I hope you get through this rough patch.

Re: Anxiety causing medical problems

I know for a fact a big part of my problem is im doing this alone. I've been single for a very long time and as an affectionate person its killing me inside. I wish if i was moving in with a partner. I do hope your right and i just need to get settled into the new place.

To be honest, I think its just "i have no savings". This is a brand new home with everything I need. Its lovely. Its only costing me $6 more each week more then my current rental! But my mind knows this but my body seems to be failing me.

I really should look into medical cannabis. Is it hard to get through doctors?

I've done a sleep test and already on a sleep machine. I believe I have a condition called me/cfs but my specialist doesn't think so.

I'm hearing you. You are not alone. I'm mindful @Former-Member is also struggling with the idea of being single and lonely.

I guess the difference with owning a house is all the costs on top such as insurance, things to buy and fix etc. Then again, there's less to fix in a new house.

I can't share much about medicinal cannabis. I can't even say who you can speak to - sorry!

But I hear the medical issues are a real pain.

Re: Anxiety causing medical problems

for what it's worth, ur doctors have no physiological explain or remedy, pointing u @ psyche... now, recall u possess a "gut/brain axis" and some feelings describe as "gut feelings", so where this points toward is that being behind things and it could even result from obvious like change in diet; beyond this one including wholistic approach might feel core exercises restore what need, or breath and breathing exercises up 2 & including presence of mind training exercises. don't cast the net too widely u may find luck, & may u...
