I have no friends at work

I have no friends at work

For many years, I haven't had a single friend at work. And it's not an issue with me, because I'm a social butterfly outside of work. I just can't make a single friend at work.

I'm a woman in my 30's who's a mathematician in STEM with CPTSD and DID from severe childhood abuse. I'm outgoing and socially apt, even though my illness has severely held me back in this arena for a lot of my life. It seems like these qualities (extroversion, friendliness, expressiveness) are actually setbacks in interacting with other mathematicians. There are very few women, and even fewer women of color at work. The ones who are there are exceedingly shy and it seems they view my extroversion and friendliness with suspicion.

I'm an artist and expressionist at heart, and it seems like the style of other mathematicians is serious, analytical, and reserved and I don't know how to click with them.

This loneliness at work is making me miserable, especially since my career is difficult and involved and I'm carrying a lot of trauma from abuse at the hands of men. I wish I could make friends but none of these people are people I click with at all. I work at a university in Australia and being in academia is my dream, so I don't want to leave. If anyone has any tips or advice on how I can be less lonely and miserable at work I'd really appreciate it.

Hey @GalacticRose, thank you for sharing your experiences with the community!

It sounds like you are going through a tough time socially at work and it must be really frustrating. It's so amazing though that you are a social butterfly in your personal life and what a contrast. You are demonstrating how brace and resilient you are in sharing your story with your peers here on the Forums.

I get how you feel your qualities are setbacks at work and I have felt much the same in my life and that I couldn't be my true self and be accepted. It's tough when there are so many males, and they dominate the workplace I know this is something I would struggle with too.

It's so amazing that you shared your story with the community and were so honest and vulnerable!

Take care and all the best!

Hello @GalacticRose

I hear you -

Being a woman in STEM can be a tough gig (has been since forever it seems) and maths is more esoteric than most disciplines, and with less teamwork.

Have you connected with your library and librarians?

By the way, I'm curious - is your username a nod to Doctor Who?

Cheers

Re: I have no friends at work

Wow @GalacticRose ,

What an interesting career! Let me guess, it’s male dominated?

I can relate. In my 30s, I’ve also worked as a female in STEM/mathematics. However, my job involved being around a lot of people and all I wanted was to be alone.

In my head, I told myself that if I make “friends” at work, all we talk about is work, and I wanted a break from work.

Im reading that you are different in that you are looking for company. What would ideal friendship at work look like for you?

@ Galactic rose.

Hi. I feel your pain. It has been years since I clicked with my work colleagues. I don't know why, I think I am a nice person? I try.

What really hurts is when the socialise outside of work and leave me out.

They share family pics and ask about each other's weekends, holidays etc. They don't show, share, or ask me about mine.

I m making an effort and I still get only get one or two word replies like "good thanks", conversation over.

I guess we just keep on trying and eventually something will crack or we crack into the team.

Uni's are terrific for meetings of great minds. I suggest tapping into groups like think tanks, smart incubators, guest lectures etc. and trivia nights. You may find interesting people who are not quite mathematics whizzes, but find you interesting and fun all the same and likewise. Don't forget your admin staff, people do admin for all sorts of reasons and some have a lot of interesting backgrounds and knowledge.

Best wishes.
