Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Loneliness, PTSD & Suicidal Ideation

Loneliness, PTSD & Suicidal Ideation

Hi, 2 weeks ago I had another phase of suicidal ideation. I'm not new to this, I've had attempts in the past, I've had 2 long psychosis episodes since 2020 with lots of hospital admissions. My psychosis/addiction even took me to prison.

I battle with PTSD symptoms now, struggle to work, very low stress tolerance, flashbacks, depression, anxiety, etc. Thankfully I have my sanity back and didn't get stuck permanently in a false reality. My diagnosis is drug induced Schizoaffective disorder & PTSD.

I used to be very involved in the community, socialised a lot, and helped my then wife to raise our kids. I was a great father. That was until my mental health took a rapid turn for the worst and I self medicated.

Life 2 years on from my last episode is vastly different. Completely isolated and lonely. All the people I thought were friends disappeared. So now I struggle with connections. I don't have much faith in people, especially in a society that still stigmatises mental illness. So what do I do? I isolate.

Over the years I've had help from professionals to focus on my interests and to help make connections in the community, but it triggers me and I battle with anxiety. I see people in the community I used to be friends with, they ignore me or I ignore them. I want nothing to do with them.

I don't have a sense of purpose in life anymore for myself other than my kids. I focus a lot on my kids when I struggle with suicidal ideation, but when I'm really struggling I feel my kids will be better off without me.

So, with social isolation/loneliness as well as living with mental illness, where does one fit into society again? My life for the past 5 years has been all about heavy mental illness stuff so I struggle with small talk. I've been abandoned by a lot of people due to my mental health, yet now that I'm level headed again how do I start the process of reintegration back into society, especially a small town community I was once a part of when half of me doesn't want to, given the past?

If anyone has been/is lonely or has ideas/experience with finding purpose again, I'm all ears. At the end of the day I want to be here for my kids, I want to be the best father I can for them.

Hi there @C73 ,

I'm hearing you. It sounds so hard. Loneliness is real. Then again, it's something many many people experience throughout the world. It's like a universal experience irrespective of how many people are around the person.

I wonder if a platform like these forums will help with some of these feelings of isolation?

Re: Loneliness, PTSD & Suicidal Ideation

welcome to the forums @C73 😊

thank you for sharing your story, i can see you've been through so much and it's really amazing to see that you're working on trying to reconnect. after experiencing social isolation, it can feel overwhelming to jump back in so something that helped me ease into reconnecting was taking baby steps - maybe spending time in public areas like going for walks near parks/trails, visiting shopping centres and making small talk with customer service people (even just a simple good morning, how's your day been?), etc. i know it may sound simple or silly but those small moments of just reconnecting with nature and just being around people can help you find you place again. then as you feel more comfortable, reaching out to people for a coffee and asking them if they're free for a chat - if you're worried about what to say, typing on notes a pre-planned paragraph or some sentence starters can help with the nerves. finding your sense of purpose starts with exploring and giving things a try, so take any opportunity you find and give things a go!

just know that it's okay to take things slowly, one step at a time. there's no rush in finding all the answers and jumping back into society, go at whatever pace works for you. glad to have you here in our forums 💙

Hey @tyme,

Appreciate the check in! I've been making positive steps this week to connect with some people and it has helped. Just chatting with people online about similar stuff in life, has been helping a lot. Just having the small amount of connection makes a big difference. Thanks again

Totally @C73

So glad to hear. At least there's some change. What more can you ask?

Did you get up to much today?

Re: Loneliness, PTSD & Suicidal Ideation

It's a start @tyme, you included. Just having people that care is lifting my spirits.

Today I dropped the kids to school, got a mental health care plan for the psychologist, went for a walk around the harbour and now at my son's tutoring lesson. Baby steps

Nice @C73 . It's a start.

Every step is a step. The journey is not always straight, but we all learn along the way.

Glad to hear you got a MH care plan. Do you have a therapist at hand?

I look forward to hearing how you go.

Very true @tyme

Yeah, I have an experienced therapist helping me to manage my PTSD and helping me get back on my feet. I'll keep you updated for sure.

Hope keeps us all going @C73

The hard part is when we stop hoping.

How was your day today? Anything planned for the wkend?

Re: Loneliness, PTSD & Suicidal Ideation

Yes it does @tyme, I've been more hopeful this past week. I've been making an effort to reach out and have been getting good responses.

I've got the kids tomorrow night then taking them to Jamberoo action park on Sunday. Weather should be good enough.

Anything on for you this weekend?
