Finding some traction!

Finding some traction!

I'm struggling a bit atm and trying to find some traction in my life. I am at crossroads to what to do this year- I have applied to study this year but I worry about weather or not I will cope with the study. I have to say I don't know what to do at this stage. I have less then a week before my offer will come in. I would interested to hear what your thoughts are and weather not just staying with my volunteer work and getting skills in the area I wish to work might be better then committing to a degree.

Hi @oceangirl. What subject are you looking at? You would have some idea of your limitations and how much time you could give to studying. If you suffer any sort of anxiety or concerns about your limitations, I would perhaps give it a bit more thought before committing time to something you may not be able to follow through with. I know with me, my biggest fear is handling money. I have problems counting money, under pressure, for that reason, working in retail is something I can't do. My job involves transporting people to shopping, appointments etc. There is money involved, but it is less than $20, I have a $10 float, so all I can change is one $20 note. If you are content with staying put for now, perhaps that might be better for you. Any further skills acquired in your volunteer work could perhaps be useful when you feel more able to tackle something a bit more full-on. Maybe look at part-time study, see how you are with that, add on as and when you feel more capable.

Re: Finding some traction!

I'm very pro study, so I'm biased.
But I think you should go for it! But start slow, just do one or two subjects in the 1st semester, don't overload yourself. I'm only doing 2 subjects next semester cause I can't cope with more and my MI.
But my question is why do you want to study? Is it work, or achievement based? What's your reason and drive to do it? I just wondered why you wanted to study and that it might clarify if it is the best thing for you right now.

Hi @oceangirl

Maybe before you take on formal study

You could test your concentration skills

You could try concentration skills by trying longer sessions of Television, Radio, Books, Computer and Internet Stuff ect

Re: Finding some traction!

@oceangirl I'm currently studying at the moment, but have taken time off here and there. It has often come to a point for me where I need to question my motivation behind study, and does it align to my values. I sometimes feel anxious about wanting to 'get things done' before a certain age, but then I need to remind myself that setting goals can have a negative impact on my health. It's not to say that setting goals is bad, but more to suggest that being flexible with making plans to study can be helpful. Finding balace while studying is really important. Going part-time is great option. It can ease you back into things while not taking on too much of load.

Good luck!

Re: Finding some traction!

Hello @oceangirl

I remember being in the same position as you some years ago when wishing to study medicine. But weighing up my current life situation decided against it knowing the stress would be too much and my family may suffer.

If you are feeling unsure whether you will cope I wouldn't even consider full time...perhaps part time at your own pace if possible. Certainly obtaining the skills and experience in volunteer work in the area you wish to obtain future employment would benefit you greatly (experience will give you an advantage).

Anything that will impact our health adversely is not worth it in my opinion. It all comes done to knowing our limitations and how urgent it is to achieve our goals. Weighing up the pros and cons and then make a decision.

Hope all goes well, for you @oceangirl. Let us know how you go 😊xx
