Got some bad news today

Hi @tyme . A tough family member told me today that she got a stoma and that the doctors told her she didn't have long to live. Of course she's going to prove them wrong - this isn't the first time they've told her bad news. But hearing her voice wavering just makes me so mad/sad.

Sounds so hard to receive this news. At the same time, it sounds like they are pretty resilient. Do you think they are just putting on a brave face @Cleo2 ?

@tyme . Yes, she's a believer in optimism and brave faces. But if it works for her, then I'm all for it.

Sorry to hear the news @Cleo2. I'm basically a family of one and i've had enough terrible luck health-wise on my own, so I guess I could say I feel like my family is unlucky.

From my own experience, just be there for her and don't feel like you need to find the right things to say. It's not the words she will want, just someone there with her.

Hello @tyme @MJG017 . Thanks for your replies. I'm just hoping she doesn't self-isolate until the very end.

@Cleo2She may self-isolate, I get a bit like that when I'm struggling. I guess she will tell you if she really wants to be alone. Like I said, just try and spend time sitting with her if that's all she wants. It's such a tough situation, but just do what you feel is best. And remember to take care of yourself as well, supporting someone going through this will take a toll on anyone.

She is likely to self isolate. She is not likely to speak to me unless she's really upset, so her telling me in the first place means that it's bad.
