Why do I feel guilty

Why do I feel guilty

Why do I feel guilty?

I am the type of person that works hard, very hard. My job is quite physical and shifts can run 8-12 hours a night, 5 days a week.

Rarely do I become ill, and I’m reluctant to take holiday time. In the last 7 years, I’ve called off a total of maybe 3 or 4 days. And never have I taken a mental health day.

Today, I just can’t face it. If I could cope with absolute isolation, I’d still be in bed. I simply can’t face dealing with coworkers, or bosses or customers today and really, I just want to crawl into a dark corner and veg.

Why do I feel so guilty for calling off work?

Hey @Jaila ,

Thank you for sharing.

Perhaps you feel guilty because you care? Because you care about your work? Because you are a hard-worker?

I can relate to what you are sharing. It's not easy.

Hopefully, self-compassion will allow yourself to take these days and not feel guilty about it. Know that if you don't have these days, you won't be able to perform your duties as well.

In the past, I used to only work 4 days. Every Wednesday was my MH day. This allowed me to focus on my recovery and ensure I was well enough to do my job.

You know yourself best. Tell yourself that without taking these days, you may not be well enough to work which may mean they won't have you or your work.

We are here to support you.

Re: Why do I feel guilty

Hi @Jaila

It sounds to me like you feel guilty because you have a really strong work ethic and pride in what you do. You don't just turn up to work, do what you have to and leave. So to take a day off when you're probably just used to pushing through must feel like failure and/or like you're letting people down.

So it's important to remember that you're no letting anyone down by taking some time to care for yourself, especially with your history of hard work and reliability. So don't feel guilty for prioritizing yourself when you feel you really need to. You've more than earned it... not that you needed to.

Hi @Jaila

I'm sorry to hear that you aren't feeling very well.

Would you feel comfortable in sharing a little bit more about what is going on for you right now?

I can relate to feeling guilty about calling in sick to work. I feel like I'm letting people down... co-workers, customers etc. But I've come to realise that it's ok to take time for yourself every now and then.

If things aren't great at the moment for you, you can't put your all into your work. Its OK to take time off for you 💙

Warm regards
