Why do so many MH professionals focus on the origin of issues rather than practical actions on what to do about them now?
I've really struggled with this. I've lost count of the amount of therapists/counsellors/psychologists I've seen over the years, but they all have one thing in common: they are very good at talking about the past and origins and reasons why I feel the way I feel, but don't really offer much beyond that. What they do seem to offer is very general - breathing exercises, advice to practice meditation and mindfulness, etc. I don't really need any of that.
Why is this? It's like the think that by looking at the past I will have an epiphany and change overnight. I don't think that's possible. Why is it so hard for MH professionals to focus on practical techniques and strategies to slowly change the way you experience things now?
