Rapid Mood Swings

Rapid Mood Swings

Hi everyone. I meditated in bed this morning and felt calm and relaxed then I got up and a lawn mower was going and I was instantly really angry. Loud noises, especially people talking really fast and loud really trigger me. I have bipolar 2 and mixed episodes (obviously) and I'm taking mood stabilisers which have recently been doubled in dose. How long do they take to work and when, if at all, will I stop going from 0 to 100 instantaneously? Any advice or strategies, especially from experts, would be greatly appreciated. My mental health is affecting my mental and physical health if that makes sense. The episodes cause me to become hopeless, depressed and tired and I just woke up. TIA.

Hi @NoonianSingh

Welcome to the forums.

I’ve got no advice but I do understand the mixed episodes and rapid cycling. I had it a lot too. They are exhausting. For me, I just had to ride it out and use my support network.

I went to hospital a couple of weeks ago and the psychiatrist changed my

meds. So far I haven’t had any episodes. Maybe it’s about finding the right

medication for you.

I do understand the toll it takes on you mentally, emotionally and psychically.

Welcome to the forums @NoonianSingh ,

I'm sorry to hear this morning was tough with the rapid mood swings. Is this something you can speak to your treating team about?

I have been in touch with my GP but as I indicated I've increased my medication but I'm still getting rapid cycling.

Re: Rapid Mood Swings

The fact you took the initiative to meditate and try to calm your body down is something to be proud of, it sucks the lawn mower ended up triggering you afterwards 😔. Do you have any noise cancelling headphones or maybe some earplugs you can use to dull the noise, that way you can reattempt meditating or progressing to another activity without the intensity of the loud noises? What has helped me in the past is practising progressive muscle relaxation and/or completing HIIT exercises to redirect some of the aggravation, I’m not an expert unfortunately but this has been advised by my psychologist.

In terms of how long it will take from your mood stabilisers to become efficient, were you given any advise by the practitioner who increased the dosage? As it is intervening with your daily living, I think getting some clarity on how long it may take, whether it’s working, any side effects etc are important. Consulting with the person/team handling your medications sounds like the right way to go 😊

Re: Rapid Mood Swings

Would agree with the contributor, person that said about the NC headphones. Noise cancel anyway does help, generally those more consistent things like long loops of calming music. Even with sound of a waterfall on them. Can help me somewhat handle more full on situations for myself at the moment, but yeah do struggle with mood swings myself. Anyway hope the headphones option helps but is something for me. And the other contributor, person that said it. All the best
