Silence is so loud

Silence is so loud

Hi, this is my first time posting in a forum like this. But I'm hoping someone may be able to resonate or help out.

Whenever I'm on my own, especially for longer periods of time the silence gets to me. Nights are the worst, the silence is deafening and I feel like I can both feel and hear my heart beating out of my chest. I'm not really sure what to do, I try to distract myself by watching shows, doing literally anything - cooking, cleaning, rearranging things, have music playing. But I find I keep pausing because I think I hear something or someone outside. I get so paranoid and I try to remind myself that I'm safe, but it doesn't feel like. Even though I know I'm in a safe place I feel like I'm being watched. Idk... Sometimes I feel like I'm going insane, I don't know what to do

Re: Silence is so loud

Hey @Dipsy_Daisies, welcome to the Forums and thank you for sharing your experiences with the community!

It sounds tough what you are going through with experiencing the silence at night. I know that the night is a challenging time for me too, and I find it hard to deal with usually. It's great that you are practising all that distraction, as it can be a great way to cope with our thoughts and feelings.

You are demonstrating your strength and resilience by reaching out to your peers here in the community and it's really brave of you to be vulnerable on the Forums.

Thanks again for sharing and please stay connected with the community!

Take care

Re: Silence is so loud

Hi @Dipsy_Daisies welcome to the group. I have a lot of experience with distracting myself with activities, but that's usually during the day. I dont have any issues with the silence though and thinking someone or something might be outside. Have you talked to any therapists about this? It may be a phobia or there maybe something triggering this anxiety. The only other things I can think of would be to keep lights on and maybe doing things more mentally engaging like games or puzzles etc, if you dont already. People always recommend mindfulness, meditation and breathing exercises to me, but I find it unhelpful... its just a silence my mind fills with worries... but so many people say it helpes them.

Other than that, maybe getting a pet if thats a possibilty, or even a desire.

Re: Silence is so loud

Hi @Dipsy_Daisies I think I can relate a little bit with what you have shared, or maybe not quite. Inside my head is very loud. Constant noise. Words, chatter. And I struggle with silence cause it makes inside my head feel all the more louder. So I work at keeping myself busy. And like you, nights are harder cause yes it is a lot more quiet. Especially once my daughter goes to bed. I really struggle with it cause keeping myself busy doesn’t really make the noise stop, it just keeps my hands busy, it passes time and in a way keeps me safe from the noise in my head. It sucks. Nothing people suggest helps. Keep ya self busy. Be with people. Only so much of that I can do though.
anyways. Welcome. Hope you find some comfort in knowing people understand.
